  • How Much Amplifier do you need?

Hi guys... I'm a total noob when it comes to this topic.

What amp or amps would you go? Budget 2-3k? 125w/chn? 200w/chn? 325w/chn?

    Room size is roughly 14x20x10height.

    4xTannoy DCC2
    2xTannoy DCC1
    2xParadigm Monitor Titans

Center is an active meridian. Odd mix I know.

Find a used PTM-8150 from Ada. It will provide 150 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 250 watts into 4, or 450 watts into 2 ohms and it is an 8 channel amp. They are hard to find used though and new are $5500.

Thanks, i will look into that.

What should i be looking at when comparing specs? or is that a moot point.

For 8 channels, and XPA-5 and an XPA-3 from Emotiva would be under budget. Hell, 2 new XPA-5's would give you 10 channels at 200 wpc for under $2K. They are tough to beat for the money. Amps are like big screen TVs, go as big as you can afford. You can never have too much power.

Emotiva amps are serious bang for your buck values. I've been able to tell a pretty big overall sound quality difference between their amps and the built in AVR amps from the 4 or so different AVR's I've had over the years. I've only tried a couple of other external amps and I love my 2 XPA-5's.

What's the difference in say a brand like emotiva and a brand like outlaw, and even Wyred? They are all 'internet direct' amp sellers... but their prices differ like crazy.

Is it worth it to invest more into a brand/model that produces the same amount of power?

Emotivas are manufactured in China by a company called Tone Winner IIRC. Outlaws amps are made by ATI and assembled in California.

I've heard nothing but good things about both outlaw and emotiva both.

There are many many good choices out there these days.
