  • JTR Sealed Captivator

Just wondering what is everyone's thoughts on the release of JTR's new sealed captivator. I'm wondering what is JTR's market for this? From what I've read the ported captivator has very good sound quality and holds a output advantage over most commercial subs under $2,000.

So if the sealed version has less output than it's ported brethren will it be able to compete with the submersive? Or will the submersive hold an edge in both sound quality and output? Just wanted to hear what you guys thing about this new product. Price is $2,000.
    I came, I saw, I purchased.

Where did you get that price from? Hopefully not from me because that was a pure guess on my part. Definitely not factual.

Which commercial subs over $2k are you referring to that win out over the standard ported cap in output? I know of none?.!.?. I'm not saying they don't exist - there is always a 1 up - I just don't know of any commercial offering.

ID offering --- maybe - but which? - 1 for 1? - again I don't know which unless perhaps a FunkyWave LMS-5400 build is the ticket.
DIY yes --- but that's not a commercial offering.

Perhaps you meant the term commercial offering loosely?

as to my sealed cap opinion --

ported are still far better sounding than any sealed in my opinion. ;) Greg will back me up on that.

      :boxer:

      :D

I should hope they'll be cheaper in passive form than a standard passive cap. Box is half the size so less expense there, and the cabinet is easier to make - less expense there.

Can you use the same driver for ported and sealed? I'm not into driver design and don't even know. Same Cap driver or different?

Very nice looking sub. The magnetic grills are a slick idea along with the rubber feet. Competition is a good thing, so this is a welcome product - price will be the real test.

So, will we see a Ported Submersive next?

Yeah I love the idea of magnetic grills along with rubber feet. I'm just not sure how this will stack up to a submersive. I'm also questioning why would Jeff want it to? From what I've read the ported Cap easily holds the output advantage over the submersive and many people believe it equals the Submersive in sound quality.

So why give up it's advantage in output? I find this new release very titillating. Also one thing I've noticed is that I've seen a few guys selling their submersives in favor of the Captivators. I have NOT seen anyone selling their Captivators in favor of a Submersive.

I might be taking my checkbook along with me to the January GTG. If all the same reps are there it will be hard not to pick the blind winner for me...if only we had thought of that at my house and done blind....grrrrr.

I think the Submersive and Cap S will have similar displacement...taking in all things considered.

DD-fly out to KC and join the party. Craig, you coming? Might be a lot to ask to drive that far again, but thought I'd ask. :)

We had better not have a winter like last year, or the G2G could be snowed out - sure hope not, looking forward to hearing all these subs.

                    Sh*t. Here we go.

The last couple of winters have been brutal.

Yeah, and my snowblower is in the shop. It is 20 years old and it took $170 to get it new again. Oh well! Toros never die.

Back to the Cap S. How do you think it will stack up to the SubM? I know Jeff said the amps are "similar", so I'm guessing they are just tweaked differently for each application, but using the same base amp?

What other competitors for this sub to take on AT that price point?

I might have to get one of those. It's going to be around 65° in Southern California today.

Persisting added to the list. (fitzwaddle on list).

I don't know, I've been wondering the same thing. Jeff is VERY familiar with the quality and output levels of the Submersive so why on earth would he make a sub for the same price, and in the same style (sealed), with basically the same amp unless he thought it could outperform it. I don't know enough about the physics of subs to take a guess at 1 better 18 inch driver vs 2 15 inch drivers. Do we know the difference of the internal sizes of the boxes? Which one is bigger?

If the sealed Cap outperforms a Submersive it will be quite a feat. I (like you) have heard a Submersive and other than the Captivator it's the only sub I've ever heard that made me say wow.

This should be a great GTG at Archaeas. I think I have work switched out. Hopefully weather will cooperate.

I am assuming this blind testing will turn everyone upside down. I'm guessing we will have people identifying what is best all over the map. If that happens, my decision on subs will be easy-best value. If that doesn't happen, then it will be tougher having to go with best I hear there, vs the Pi drivers etc.

It is always exciting to hear new things. I'm assuming we will have CHT 18s (sealed), Submersive(s), Cap Pros and Cap S, PB13U? and one other?

Guess I better go see what Archaea is saying on avsforum about that. I'd like to hear the PB13U but if everyone says it can't compete with those above, then nm.
