  • Help selecting turntable

There were posts on AV123 with some information on turntables but here I am ready to buy and can't access the info so I'm begging help! I'm looking for a turntable to use with Ref 1's (soon to be ninja'd) and a Gizmo. On Stereophile the only thing I could find under 1k was a Rega P1. I also remember references on AV123 about the Project Debut III. I'd like to stay under $500. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on turntables in this price range?

I have a Music Hall MMF-5 which is a nice mid-level TT, it is made in the same factory as the Projects in the Czech Republic, so they are pretty similar. Rega's seem to be a little pricier for similar features, but are well regarded. I don't think you can go wrong with any one of these.

Other options are also Denon's, Technics and vintage TT's.

I would be tempted to look at the sale Music Direct is having on B-Stock VPI Scouts for something like $1300, if I wanted to move upscale.

    Good luck in the search.

I'll follow up on the sale from Music Direct. I've had good experience with them in the past. Thanks for the info!

Sure did. Ended up with the Rega P3/25 with the Elys cartridge. Love it! Paired it up with a Rega Luna phono amp and a Mapletree amp (Theo's) and Ref 1's. It's my kitchen sound system. Even washing dishes if fun these days!!
Now I'm working on a DIY vinyl washing system. There were some interesting ones on Audiokarma I'm using for inspiration! Stay tuned!

What ended up being the problem with the one you got? I didn't follow the thread when I couldn't help.

OK, my newbeeness is going to show but I'll confess. Patrick figured it out. The weight on the arm was not set correctly. Got that set & everything has been roses since!
