  • New Tubes For Onix SP3

    Hi
I have an Onix SP3 That i need to replace one of the 5881 tubes.
So now that i have a reason to do so i can look at other tubes but i am not too much in the know about them or where to get them.
    Any recomendations would be welcomed.
I would like to stay with tubes that accent the lower to midrange frequencies.

    Thanks
    :) :) :)

I've never actually heard the stock tubes since I bought mine tubeless, but the Valve Art 350b's seem like a popular replacement for the 5881's and I certainly thought mine sounded good. Pretty affordable too.

I would consider the JJ Tesla 6L6/5881 tubes from Eurotubes. Please understand that I have only heard the JJ 2A3-40, the JJ EL84, and the JJ 12AT7 tubes, all of which were of exceptional quality. I now run the JJ's exclusively in my 2A3 amp ahead of my black plate RCAs and other such top flight NOS. Additionally, I have read the reviews of the JJ 5881 and believe you would be quite pleased with the purchase.

I would pick up some Russian Military Surplus 6P3S-E tubes off Ebay. You want the coin base(thin base) vs the standard thick bakelight base like most power tubes have as the coins everyone seems to like better.

I picked up 2 quads last year, all work very well and I actually think they sound better than the brand new Tung Sol tubes that are generally thought of as the best 5881 for the SP3

The 6P3S-E is a direct drop in and runs the same bias voltage, not sure about the 350b's

I will also 2nd the JJ/Teslas, This is what Gary Dodd uses in almost all of his amps. I havent used the power tubes in the SP3, I have used the 12AT7.12AX7, and the 6922 and have really liked them.

Either the coin base or 350Bs will work fine. Both are good values. The 350Bs can take a little higher bias, maybe 1.20 to 1.25 or so. Some of the other options that I like will require socket savers/extenders.

Replacing the stock 12AX7s with some GE 3 mica black plate 5751s is also a big bang-for-the-buck upgrade. I still have quite a few if you are interested.

Prices are usually between $45 and $100 a pair depending upon age, condition, and version. I don't have nearly as many as I used to, but I still have a few pairs available. Send me a PM if you are interested.
