  • Need help choosing what to do...

OK, so I need some help choosing what to do:

Thought 1: Replace my MFWs (currently in the Classified Forums for sale) with 18.T or 18.2, keeping my Rockets (1000 sig; Bigfoot sig; RS250MKIIs).

Thought 2: Keep MFWs (for now) and buy either JTR Triple 8s; LS6; Sparks; SHO/PRO 10; or something from the GR research line (I'd need to have someone else build them as I don't have time)...for anything but the LS6 I'd go three for LCR (there's pair of Triple 8s on audiogon that I'm in contact with the seller on).

    Thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Phil

I think it might depend on what you are after?

A change in the sound of your speakers or more low end for movies/music.

I'm 80%+ Home theater these days, so either a change in sound or more low end is beneficial. If I had to prioritize I'd lean towards a change in sound - that being said, I'm trying to get a feel if the change would be dramatic enough from the Rockets to the names I listed.

Well the only ones I can comment are on the GR Research line -

I went from the rocket 750s/Big foot to Ref 1.5/Ref center...both setups with Elt DPA for rears.

Now I have the Ref 1.5s, Gr Research N3s center, av1rs for rears. I also had the GR N2x in a 2 channel setup for a while.

I really like what the neo tweeter does so that I why I went that route though the av1rs doesn't use that tweeter. I am still trying to move my Ref 1.5s out so I can go with the N3 TL.

I would love to hear some of those other speakers mentioned in your list as well.

Have you considered an ACA Trinity LCR set?

I had not yet. How do they compare with JTRs or some of the other speakers I listed?

Well LS6's they aren't, but they're quite a bit cheaper and smaller too.

I wish I could compare them directly to the JTR's, especially since that's likely to be a comparison that I'll be asked to make quite a bit, but I haven't heard any JTR's. Based on their design differences I'd expect the Trinity's to be a bit more refined and smooth sounding, but give up some total output capability. The JTR's are more sensitive (98db vs. 90db for the Trinity's) but they only go down to 70hz, while the Trinity's will get you down to 40hz, which will allow you to cross the MFW-15's over a bit lower or even run the Trinity's by themselves. The Trinity's are also a bit smaller and lighter, but will still require stands. The rosewood finishes are probably a wash, but you can also get the Trinity's in a fairly stunning piano black, piano rosewood, or piano birdseye maple. I know you're 80% HT, but still I doubt the JTR's could compete for 2-channel.

There are some thoughts from others who aren't dealers in this thread.

Unfortunately I don't think there's anybody near you with a set at this point. We'll have to do a gtg out that way at some point. :)

About a year ago, I listened to the LS6's vs the Gedlee Abbeys, and felt the Abbeys were a better fit for me. The LS6's are a bit unforgiving in terms of positioning it seemed, and the Abbeys did a better job at holographic imaging and Home Theater. I expect the Sho10's to be close to the Abbeys, though probaby not quite as good. I'm guessing 90% of the way there, given the differences in the 2 wave guides.

Will know more in the next few weeks as I start to compare the two against each other.
LCR: Gedlee Abbeys for LR and Nathan for Center Surround & rear 4 x Sho10's
                Subs: 4 x 18.2
                Electronics: Marantz SR7002, Acurus 200x3 (LCR), PS3, HTPC, CDP300, Mits HC1500, Elite Peregrine 2.35 156" Acousticpro4k
