I am not a big fan of Audyssey because of the issue cited by the OP and a few other things. I much prefer a manual setup using an SPL meter. I understand there are strong feelings both ways; this is just the way I do it.

Having said that, if you opt for the manual setup, here is some info based on my experiences with my 3808 ci.

In setting up manually, set the fronts to small, but still set the sub to LFE+Main. LFE applies to movies only, but if you want the sub for music and other sources then set it to LFE+MAIN.

It is possible to set crossover frequencies for individual speaker – go to the Crossover Frequency menu (manual setup->speaker setup->crossover freq.) and select “Advanced”.

Also, check the channel volume control and see what your settings are there. At one point, I found my sub set at -12.

To set or standardize volume levels for each device in your system:
    SOURCE>OTHER>SOURCE LEVEL.

Always hit "Return" to save your settings. Using "Exit" doesn't save them.

Hopefully, some of this will be useful.

I love Denon receivers, but the manuals take some getting used to. The batpig link shown above is a pretty good source of information.

You might want to look at the Denon to English Dictionary at http://batpigworld.com/. There is a good section on Audyssey setup there.

    5.1 Setup -

3808ci - Fully updated, all options
    Fronts - JBL - L890s
    Center - Old JBL - SC305
    Backs - Old JBL - G200s
    Subs - 2x18.2s

First problem I'm having is that if I turn the gain on the 18.2s to more than the 8 o'clock position Audyssey sets them to -12db. At the 8 o'clock position I finally got it to set the subs at -10db. Once calibrated I watched a movie and it felt like I had no bass...turned the gain back up to the 12 o'clock position and the earth shook again. Is there a setting I'm missing so that I can run the subs hot? I calibrated them at 0db boost and it still felt weak even with the 15db boost turned on with the gain down so low. Is there some way to change the -10db Audyssey is applying somewhere other than the 5/10/15db boost setting?

Next problem is Audyssey keeps setting my fronts to large. I have the receiver crossover set at 80hz for all speakers other than the subs which I have at 120hz.

Lastly, when I run REW I have about a 10db null at around 60hz...then I looked at the audyssey eq settings and it had 60hz set at ~ -10db. Grrrrrr...I liked how it adjusted everything else but I definitely want to correct that. Is there a way on the 3808 to manually adjust the audyssey equilization?

I know these are beginner noob questions. I've been reading all night but nothing quite matches up to the problems I'm having. Any help at all would be appreciated (even if it is taunting that shows what I should be typing into search to find my answers)!
All speakers should be set to small.
If speakers are set to crossover of 80, then I would think you'd want to subs set to 80 as well, correct?

Also, you should take screen shots of the Audyssey reports to post.

Please try those changes and report back here or at AVS or Audyssey.

    Good luck.

    Mike

    Help links

Not to diminish the technical prowess of TCA forum members, but are you aware of this thread:

    AVS - "Official" Audyssey thread

...where audio signal processing researcher Chris Kyriakakis from Audyssey helps people and many forum members help with technical and other questions.

There is also the Audyssey site:

    "Ask Audyssey"

    Good luck.
