  • Why no "upconvert" over component? DRM confussion...

I know there are a handful of DVD players that will upconvert over component,
but why not all of them??? I'm guessing it DRM - but, how does these handful get away with it - "bypassing" DRM?? What's the difference in my cable box passing HD over component vs DVD upscaling over component?? I guess, in simple terms, I paid for SD disc so the studio doesn't want me to be able to upconvert, hence DRM...right? But there are & have been $$ outboard scalers - do they have issues with DRM too??? The fees we pay for cable cover any DRM issues ("royalties")??

Reason I ask all this is mainly because I'm up in the air on what to do once I get new TV. Too many SD disc & not looking to jump on BR bandwagon anytime soon.
    1) MY AVR240 has no HDMI, and I really want the convenience of letting it handle video switching.
    2) I already have plenty of comp cables & don't wanna shell out more for HDMI
(I know, I could go to monoprice and save mega $$)
    3) I'm still gonna have to run optical to my AVR since no HDMI

So, do I get one of the players that will upconvert over comp?
Or forego AVR video switching & take the HDMI plunge, buying a less expensive upconvert player?
Hell, I'm liable to be satisfied w/ 480p from my disc - at least for a while.
I'm likely to be getting 42" 720p set - any chance it's upscaling of SD disc will be sufficient? Stupid question - I know it would depend on what set I go with...:fryingpan::scratchchin:

The cost of HDMI cables from monoprice is less than $5. I would get the cheaper upconverting player and the HDMI cables over a more expensive DVD player that upconverts over component.

If you are willing to spend a little bit more on a TV that does a good job of upconverting that might be a way to delay the switch until you go to an HDMI receiver.

Yeah, I knew the monoprice + less expensive player combo made most sense.
I mean, it's not hard to switch inputs - hell, it's on the cable remote...
Plus the fact I only watch 1 disc a week avg....:fryingpan:
And, the shortest path the best, right??? Why do I need the AVR to do the switching??

Plus, I can look at this for a "need" to upgrade AVR soon too! Gotta admit, I like my HK - prolly stick w/ them even on upgrade...

Don't forget my source is inside my a$$ and not inside at TCA, but if I had to pull another wildly unsubstantiated rumor out of my backside I would have to go with the lower end Denon units. Figure 5 WAF's + Scamp + DVD layer +receiver for $999 or something like that. I'd call Bill or Ray for real info. Rumor has it they give the best answers between 2 AM and 5 AM.

Perfect time for me to call!!!:fryingpan:;) Even better that Bill on Eastern & I'm on Central - he'll have no excuse as he's an hour ahead!!!

D**** woulda been my guess, they were actually my first choice when I "won" my HK on Ebay...
But I do like my HK now that I have it...and actually like the looks of it over D's

The only reason to have an AVR do HDMI switching is if you have a need to switch more than 1 HDMI source. Most sets only have 1 HDMI source input. If I were toy this is the route I would take:

Buy yourself a HD DVD player as these are arguably the best upconverters around for prices of a brand new 'cheapie' upconverter and will provide a much more enjoyable experience. The fact that you can get HD DVDs for well under $10 desn't hurt things either. Use HDMI out (for the upconverting properties) and use optical or if you buy a player with 6ch analog out to the AVR for audio.

Use component out from your cable box to the TV. Use either coaxial or optical to the AVR fr the audio.

You can continue to use your current non upconverting DVD player and the TV will take care of the upconversion itself as it can only display its native resolution of 720p. This means the above points are moot if you choose this way.

Upconversion over component was supposed to stop video piracy. However there are still a few (very few) DVDs that can be upconverted this way.

I hope this answers your questions.:salute:
