  • Thinking of upgrading my RS1000's

For those of you that own LS-6's, how much of an upgrade do you think it would be? I listen to just about everything, from heavy metal, to classical, jazz, newage, etc.

I've got the itch, but I want something that's a significant upgrade, and have always drooled after the LS series. I'm about a 70HT/302ch guy but when I listen, I really like to spend some time lost in the music.

    Any feedback appreciated.

The LS6's are in another league . Better soundstage , Detail and bass to kill for.

    you won't be disapointed.

I'd have someone build me a pair or GR-Research Super Vs and call it a day :yep:

I'm sure the LS6 sounds amazing though.

Those Super-V's look cool, but the kit is 2500, lord knows what the build would cost. I'm trying to keep this upgrade in the 3kish range and I noticed Shawn has some LS-6's he built. I'm going to look for someone in PDX who has the LS6's so I can listen to em, but I think that's the way I'm gonna go.

The next question is what to do with my center/surrounds. I've heard the X-voce is a good match. Perhaps the LS4 if it ever sees the light of day. What about Surrounds? What are folks using? Would the RS300's work ok, or would the X-omni be better? I've been dying to try those as side surrounds for a while...

Interesting, I thought you dumped yours cause you couldn't tune them in to your liking. Trouble finding the right amp, room, etc...

I have a pair of LS6s I'm using in my home theater (plus an x-voce center, x-omni surrounds and a pair of "first run" mfw-15s). I'm across the river in Vancouver. Let me know if you would like to hear them.

I'd like to throw out there to consider the Gedlee offerings, too, as they are simply fantastic. Seaton's Sparks might be worth considering, as well.

The LS6 are an incredible speaker, no doubt, and are a significant upgrade. I think they're a step down from the Gedlee Abbeys I have (which are significantly better than my OB7s with massive upgrades). The Sparks I've not heard but are in a similar pricerange, are active speakers, and use pro drivers that will give you bigtime dynamics. Heard good things about them.

I've heard the Seaton Sparks (actually one of the first few pairs made I think) and they are amazing!
Looks like there are a variety of cosmetic and other changes going into them now.
                    Not cheap, but great.

I've thought about the Seaton Sparks as well, but I had thought the LS6's would image better, which at this point seems to be my priority. How well do the Abbey's image? I read a few reviews, and I couldn't really figure out why/what makes them a large upgrade. Can you expand a little more on that CB?

They use similar drivers to those in the Gedlees (same brand B&C) and have the advantage of being powered, but they don't have the waveguide which allows for constant directivity (and other advantages).

In the $3,000 range...those three are all amazing choices (LS6, being the other).

Just trying to bring up alternatives. The LS6 are not the easiest speakers to make work in many rooms, but under ideal circumstances, you'll have an amazing experience.

                        Edit:
I'll reply to your post in an edit to this post.
The Abbeys constant directivity allows them to work better in most rooms and it raises intelligibility of dialogue significantly over most speakers. When set up as Dr. Geddes recommends, the sidewall reflections are basically ignored. They're extremely sensitive and will work with any amplification. They are extremely dynamic and image amazingly well. I'm really still blown away by these speakers, I've had OB7s stored away in my basement for months. www.gedlee.com will explain a lot of why they're such an intelligent design. It all starts with the waveguide and why a waveguide is the best option for getting high-end sound. What we hear is a combination of sound from different angles. Danny's speakers have tremendous off-axis response compared to most speakers, but won't compare with Gedlee offerings. Danny also believes in having the high frequencies crossed over as low as possible which waveguides allow Dr. Geddes to do.

Thanks, I'm curiious what some of the challenges folks have had making the ls6 work? If it that they need some distance from the walls? These woudl be going into a 18x23x9 dedicated listening room/theater. Are they just too much for small spaces?

Being too close to line source speakers is an issue. Not having enough clearance from back walls or sidewalls will be an issue. In your room, they should work just fine (unless you're sitting awfully close).

No matter what, you'll find them to be a huge upgrade over your RS1Ks. No question there. Perhaps Sandbagger can give you his opinion as he's heard the Sparks and LS6. He's a friend of Mark Seaton's, obviously, but hopefully can compare them a little.

That makes sense, thanks very much for the good info. I'll do a bit more search on the Abbeys as well. Slogging through the whitepaper on directivity vs controlled directivity now..wow...deep stuff...
