Gonk, Help!

While playing a CD in my Oppo BDP-83 SE, the music suddenly cut off and a buzzing noise came from the Oppo. I shut it off and on the restart it sounded fine ... for two minutes, then failed again. On the next try (with a different disk), the disk would not load.

After a complete power down, the unit seemed normal ... for four minutes. Then the music cut off and the Oppo began making buzzing noises. I fear the laser has crapped out. But I see there have been some firmware upgrades. Any chance this is a known glitch that a firmware upgrade would fix?

Now it won't recognize Blu-ray disks. :crazy:

This is not something I've heard about, certainly not related to a firmware issue. If you haven't done so already, I'd recommend resetting the player to the defaults. If that doesn't work, I'd contact OPPO. Email them this weekend - that'll put you near the front of the line for help, and you might even get a response this weekend.

They did respond, which pleasantly surprised me. I upgraded the firmware and did a reset, but it did not help. It will not load properly, will not recognize a CD or a DVD, or play back. I think there is a mechanical failure. It's going back. I am sure Oppo will make it right (it's still under warranty).

Oppo stepped up. Fixed the defective power supply under warranty and even covered shipping both ways. working great now.
