  • Boxee Box by D-Link

This looks pretty cool, lookout squeezebox...
The Boxee Box has already been semi-announced once, but it's making a much more grand debut here at CES -- and it's coming with a spec list this time.

What exactly is it? A media streamer / net top?

its a media funnel. it grabs hulu, youtube, pandora etc videos from the web plus whatever movies/music you have on your home server. it puts a pretty interface on all of that. And the best value-add is the metadata collection. in the same way itunes might grab cover art 'auto-magically' this grabs cover art, fan art, reviews, etc. pretty neat. i have boxee running on an apple tv and it really is neat.

This newfangled high tech stuff is getting a little over the top for me. I miss the good old days of sticking in a nice beefy 8 track and sitting down for some quality music time.

Oh, and why would you want "fan art" anyway?

Very interesting! Looks like the audio output can be upgraded with an S/PDIF optical interface if I see the back panel correctly.

Yep, s/pdif out to your external dac. Plus with boxee, a browser, and a keyboard it can also do double duty for surfing the net. Not much of a reason to buy a squeezebox/apple tv, etc. when this can do so much more. Here is a link to the product homepage.
