  • DIY tubed pre- amp

Here is a copy of a post I made over at the Skiing Ninja site about the billnchristy diy tubed pre-amp that I got pre-assembled from Bill:

"Ok got mine. Bill sold me his prototype which is quite professional looking inside and out. I was surprised by that (sorry about that Bill :raspberry:).

Here is the short version: I first used it with the Russian tubes and after listening for a while I was thinking " did I get "the satisfied or your money back guarantee?"". Voices (like Melody Gardot ) were stunning but the piano in some Cassandra Wilson stuff sounded like a toy piano and many instruments were recessed. Good bass and vocals, overall, bad...

Bill also included some Hitachi tubes that he had never listened to and these saved the day: you ain't gettin' it back! With the Hitachis voices aren't quite as incredible but everything is better. As if a veil was peeled away. Bass is hefty and tight, piano is liquid and crystalline. I'm finding that I don't need to raise the volume as much to get an enjoyable sound.

I had never really listened to anything tubed nor owned a pre-amp ( I still can't explain what a pre-amp is to the spouse) but I am now a believer. The only real problem is I have a feeling I am now on the quest for the perfect tube!

BTW, Bill is a pleasure to deal with and packs stuff well."

The Euterpe kit should be at my place by next weekend. Not sure how long it will take to do the build. The manual is pretty good with pictures.

Will be interesting to compare the preamps sound to django1's findings.

I'll be curious to hear your findings... I should mention that my system consists of x-ls encore, x-sub, Panny dvd player with 707 dac and Bill and Dweekie t-amp.

I also believe in synergies now...

I am having Bill Supersize one for me...then I will be able to compare it with my Eddie Current HD300 tube HP/preAmp.
Hope to pair it with the xamps....have a master ninja'd Ref1 waiting for it. The Dac will either be the beresford or Lavry DA10. The beresford sounds good enough with the Ref1/SP3 combo.
And then try them in my STAX rig....

Reposting this from the SN thread.

Pictures of the Euterpe kit in the wild.

I really like the purpleheart wood sides and textured black chassis look!

Hope for some build time this weekend.
