  • PS3 Died (kind of)

Didn't know if this was the right area for this post, but seemed good enough. Feel free to move it if it needs moving.

    So... to the point.

I was playing RB2 Thursday night no problems, 10:00 rolls around and I decide to pop in a movie. Start watching the 1st Pirates of the Caribbean and 10 minutes into it, the movie freezes. I figure this is just the disc being scratched/dirty, so I pop it out, clean it, pop it back in, PS3 doesn't recognize it. I figure it must be the disk, so I pop in another BD, same result. Reboot the PS3, try RB2 again since it was just working 15 minutes ago, same result.

The thing boots, but now all I get is the loading icon and the disc never shows up in the XMB. Backed up all of my data to an external hard drive, reformatted the PS3, same result.

Lucky for me the thing is less than a year old, just need to get it serviced by Sony, so this leads me to my question. Anybody have any experience getting warranty or other service done on a PS3 by Sony? How was it? Any advice?

    Ps3

Your unit is dead, laser is no longer reading the disc. I had the same problem last year, after going to their web site and filling out the form replacement was no problem,They sent me the new unit in about 4 days with a prepaid shipping label to return the old one.

Very cool, did they send you a new PS3 or just the optical drive?

They replaced the whole unit minus cables etc.. Quick and easy without any hassles as long as your warranty is still in effect, out of warranty service may be a whole different experience.

Yeah, but I am still covered under warranty (barely though, purchase date 5/23/08) and with the 4 day turn around time listed above, if I can be that lucky, no hard feelings.

              Good for you. :)

Mine had died just outside warranty window and had to pay $159 (including shipping both ways).
Luckily for me, I had purchased it with a credit card, which had warranty extension on it, so CC picked up the repair bill. :)

Sorry to hear about this, the same thing happened to me a few months ago. I had a launch 60gb and I think the optical drive failed. Just as you stated, it wouldn't read cds/dvd/or blurays. :(

I now have a 80gb model, seems to be running great so far.

Well, I didn't get the nice turn around time that you did, did you register yours? I always seem to forget to do that. DOH!

Just got it back last night, so far the process has been rather painless, except for the fact that I have been out a PS3/BD player for 23 days! Didn't have time to hook it back up last night, so we will see how it goes tonight.

Same happened to me while watching a movie on sunday night....Mine is 5 weeks out of warranty. Luckily I bought it on my Visa Platinum which doubles the warranty. So I have to pay the $149.99 to get it "fixed" and then the Visa card pays me back.

This just continues my dislike of Sony and makes me love Visa.

This is a huge problem when you look it up online and Sony refuses to accept that they are selling a defective product....like Microsoft does with the xbox's Rrod.

Yeah, it seems to be a rather common problem. The thing that makes me sad, is that this seems to happen right at or around the 1 year mark, I was lucky and mine died less than a month before the warranty expired. The sad part being that my PS3 now has a 90 day warranty, which is cool, because the original 1 year expires in 5 days, but I am worried about the optical drive going out again in ~ a year.

Yeah mine was registered,I usually don't bother but luckily did this time. At least you got it taken care of.
Good luck, Iv'e had no further problems with mine but then I don't use it alot.

My PS3 also broke a few months ago, same symptoms and it was 2 months out of warranty. They repaired it quick, but I had to pay the $150, which really sucks. At least Microsoft stepped up and did the right thing by giving the 360 a three year warranty for the the 3 red rings issue. This IS becoming a bigger issue for the PS3, anyone smell a class action suit coming?
