  • Stereophile Mag review of AV123 Ref 1

Does anyone else get Stereophile magazine? There is a review of the AV123/Onix Reference 1 (mark II) speaker in it. It is generally a very favorable review, but isn't the Ref 1 discontinued? Maybe it is some sort of April Fool's day thing. Or is the Ref 1 coming back?

Have the mag, and perused it. They seemed to give it a pretty good rating, overall and in the context of other speakers in the price/quality range....

I agree that it's odd to even be there. I would think Stereophile would be in contact with AV123 when they are going to put in the review; they likely have had the speakers a while. So maybe they ARE going to come back to AV123....or maybe it's a comedy of errors on both sides!
What if the Hokey-Pokey really IS what it's all about?!

    Kinky Tom!

It's the Mark II, and it's not sold by AV123. Someone made a boo boo ;)

My pair of REF1's with the rosewood veneer from AV123 were MKII's.

I read it too! Good review, but of all the products to review, why a discontinued model, from a discontinued product range? Maybe the refs will make a comeback when the current issues get ironed out at AV123. I hope so, I've never had a chance to listen to refs but I know there are a lot of people who really enjoy them.

          Dan.
          Here we go again ;)

              AV123 / Onix clarification (from 1-11-09 post from Mark L. Schifter - av123.com Founder):

              Link

"...ONIX belongs to Mr. Pu - I am however 50% owner of this brand in America. Mr. Pu came to me some time back as he told me he wanted to sell his brand to a famous Chinese Company (yes, I know who it is - but I'm not saying as I promised I would not)... I told Pu he should do it - and forget about my ownership in the brand here... He should GO FOR IT...

              ONIX is Mr. Pu's brand..."

              ----------------------------------

I don't think that distinction is captured in the article where it is noted:

"...Onix Reference 1 Mk.II an affordable bookshelf speaker from AV123."

I remember this MLS post about the Onix brand being sold. I didn't think that it involved any of the actual AV123 speaker models. Maybe the Ref 1 lives on from another manufacturer.
