  • Ok, another Camera Thread, this one about DSLR's though

So I want to buy a new camera and want to finally get a "nice" DSLR (IE not a point and shoot). I currently have a 35mm Canon EOS ElanIIE which is a fantastic camera. As everything moves digital, I have found that I really don't use that camera anymore.

I would like to get another Canon and have loved all the ones I have used and the one I currently own as well as being able to interchange my accessories I already have with the new camera. I want to spend less than $1,000 which looks like it puts me in the Rebel line of DSLR's. Is it worth it getting the nicest one? I only briefly looked this morning, but couldn't find a way to compare all three models side by side.

Can someone help me out? I'll be using the camera for everything from everyday life pictures to scenic, portrait and "artistic" stuff.

    Thanks!

If the Rebel XSi is in your price range I would go for it, it is a really nice camera. I wound up going with the XS due to price constraints, but the XSi is nicer, much faster AF and it uses a 9 point AF as opposed to the 7 point XS.

Additionally, if you want to keep it under $1k, go to a local Circuit City. I went to 4 a few weeks ago, and they all had the EOS 40D for $919 or so. The sale price should be better now, the hard part is just finding one. I was personally looking for an XS, but they were all sold out, but all 4 stores I visited had at least one 40D in stock.

If you don't have to have a DSLR consider the Canon PowerShot XS1 IS. 20X optical zoom; HD video; CMOS sensor + lots of manual features for $600. Amazon is taking pre-orders right now (if you are not afraid of that kind of thing).

I am totally befuddled myself on what camera to buy next. I have a Nikon D40, which I like a lot. I was thinking about the D90, but I'm looking at ~$2000 for camera and a few decent lenses. Now thinking about keeping the D40 and adding the Canon XS1, then upgrading to a better DSLR once video integration becomes a bit stronger. I know purists cringe at video on DSLR, but I find it so convenient. I still don't have a video camera, and I probably won't buy one until HD gets real cheap.

All I know for sure is that the camera companies do an amazing job at making you feel the need every year with their new offerings. They are truly evil.
As it turns out, I was never banned. I was wrong yet again. First Obama, now this. :)

Bought my daughter a Canon XS from Tri State recently. They have the XSI for a pretty good price right now. Transaction with them was smooth. For more $ they have a package with a telefoto zoom as well as the 18-55lens.

Use them as a price point and see if you can do better. No sales tax unless you live in NYC and I paid $10 for shipping.

Thanks, I just checked their site and Costco. They have the same price for the XSI kits. I'm gonna start keeping my evil eye out :salute:
