  • I've got to hand it to HH Gregg....

Ok, for the few of you who were following my purchase of my first LCD TV here.... http://www.tweakcityaudio.com/forum/...read.php?t=684 you knew today was the day they were supposed to receive their last shipment of the 37" Sharp Aquos 720P LCD's that I purchased on Friday.

So, I went in late this afternoon after the Mrs. got off work to pick it up. Only, they didn't have it. They only got partial shipments and today was the start of a big close out sale on a bunch of stuff so while my particular purchase was already on close out prior to today's sale.... somehow in the "frenzy" of putting all the stuff out on the floor, My TV never got marked as sold and put aside.

By the time I got there, the only one they had left in all of the Indy stores, was the display model (now disconnected and sitting on a table) which had been on the floor and playing non-stop since July of 2008 (I guess they track when TV's go on the floor as display models). I balked at that even though they offered me another $50 off.

I was preturbed, but didn't get irate or anything telling the sales guy I understood how the mistake happened and we needed some time to ourselves to think about what we wanted to do. The next thing I know, the manager is with us appologizing profusely about the mix up. He said if I wouldn't mind waiting a few minutes, he would crunch some numbers and come up with what he hoped would be a reasonable offer for us. We said sure....

After about fifteen or twenty minutes, He came out and asked us if we would enjoy a larger set. He offered us a 40" Samsug 1080P (LN40A550) Which they sell for $997.97
http://www.hhgregg.com/ProductDetail...Store=All#page for $649 (which was $50 more than we paid for the 37" 720P Sharp). I said, make it $699 and include the three year bumper to bumper HH Gregg extended warranty (A normal $150 charge) and you've got a deal. He immediately said no problem and again apologized all over himself for selling our TV out from under us.

Of course, his sales guy was probably hit pretty hard in commissions when I declined the $59.99 and upgrade $74.99 6 foot HDMI cables. ;) But still, I think I was treated very fairly and got a very nice deal. I really think they were expecting me to throw a :hissyfit: or something. But, once again the calm cool approach worked very well.

I can say that so far anyway, right out of the box the on screen menu is OUTSTANDING and quite easy to navigate. The remote is AWESOME. The buttons are LARGE and well spaced for older farts like me. And, the PQ is quite nice so far without a single adjustment.

My hat is off to HH Gregg for sure....

Awesome, Quad. While I have been known to rant and rave on occasion, there is a time and place for a cool head and proper perspective. You got a great deal. Enjoy!

Congrats John! It's nice to actually have a good experience when purchasing electronics. CC just perterbed me too many times so I went to another local place and got great service as well.

Now, since I'm back as the picture patrol, I'm afraid you're being warned now for not posting pics so get them up brotha!

Oh CRAP Scott.... this is just a "thrown together" secondary rig we were using in our living room until our basement flooding issues get resolved and I can re-open my HT. We were using an old 27" CRT before this purchase.

I know the digital camera is kaput, so I'll have to get out my 35 MM and see if I can shoot something fairly decent. It might be a while so be patient.

Great news, John. I've had Samsungs (DLPs, not LCDs) for years and been very happy with them. Enjoy!

                  Cool Quad...

I've had great dealings w/ HHGregg everytime. And it seems their salespeople at least try to become educated on product.
I still feel "guilty" not purchasing my set from them - all my dealings were for others I was helping (4 in all). I'm gonna make it a point to "upgrade" with them.
2 of the sales guys still greet me by name when I walk in - it's gonna be hard to decide which one of the 2 gets my commission...:no clue:

John- that Samsung is the exact one that I have.
Bought it last year for around $950 or so.
The HD Over-the-air that I get with this set
(and record on Tivo) is absolutely fantastic!
I love my set - and have not seen a better picture
anywhere. The first Bluray I watched (KungFu Panda)
                    blew me away also.
IMO, you got a GREAT deal! Cool!

Yeah.... thanks. From the first night of OTA broadcast (2 hours of 24 and the local FOX news broadcast), even without the first tweak, the digital picture was quite nice. I'm not sure if the OTA digital signals are actually HD yet (are they?), but the PQ was very, VERY good. The tuner seemed to lock in the signals very good and we even ended up with some digital signals we couldn't get through the tuner on our Panny DVD recorder.

So, I guess now that pandora's box is truly open, it's DISH, DIRECT TV or Cable next huh? :lurk:

I'm no expert, but the HD OTA that I get is usually broadcast
in 1080i - don't confuse that with the digital OTA.
I actually have deleted all the digital OTA (and cable) local
stations from my channel main menu and watch HD OTA exclusively. the HD channels have the -1, -2 etc.. behind the channel.
And as far as cable HD or direct HD channels (that my brother
gets) vs my OTA HD- there is no comparison.
My OTA HD is clearer and a better picture.

Obviously, I'm no expert either. I was referring to the digital signals as being the .1 and .2 channels and the ones without being analog still. I "thought" I understood that digital broadcasts were done in 720P with a full switch to 1080P some years down the road.

Now, I may be TOTALLY washed up here and confused as all get out. Which most of you around here know.... isn't an uncommon thing. :p
