  • I Need Rec's For a Radar Detector

Well, it seems that all my radar detectors (wife's and mine) decided to break at the same time. Units were getting some age on them. I have not kept up with what is on the market nowdays (for a reasonable price).

Any recommendations for a good unit, including laser detection, would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mike

I still have a Valentine One and wouldn't have anything else. Upgraded several times at modest cost too.

If you get pulled over just be persistent, patient, and polite with the police. Right Dane?
As it turns out, I was never banned. I was wrong yet again. First Obama, now this. :)

Escort 8500x50 It's one of the best there is. When I was selling them a few years ago, RadarTest.com rated it the best detector, period. I'm sure it's still pretty high up there. They run about 300 bucks or so but pay for themselves the first time you get saved.

Also remember that NOTHING detects instant on Laser until you've been hit. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. There is no way to detect it becuase it isn't constantly on. They will only tell you when you've been hit. There are add on pieces that are laser diffusers and in most states, completely legal. The FDA holds the licensing to Laser transmittal vs the FCC for Radar. FDA says anyone can transmit laser but you have to have a license to transmit radar, which is what diffusers/jammers do.

          Hope this helps!

EDIT: I just looked on their website and they still sell the 8500x50 for about $300 and have a new model, the 9500i which is about $500

Hey, if I got pulled over for speeding, I certainly wouldn't be aggravated, hurried, and rude to them! After all, I'd be the one breaking the law... the cop's just the one who caught me...

I have the Escort 8500 and does a real good job picking up radar in long distance. But like stated nothing picks up instant on if your alone of the road. It will pick up the laser if the laser is used before it's pointed at your car.

                    Have used Escort and Valentine.

My favorite is the Valentine due to the arrows. You can see if the radar is coming from off to the side. (Usually from a store door opener) from in front, or coming up from behind you.

They also have a multiple bogy counter in case there is more than one cop in the area.

Only use mine on long trips.

Sent in one time for upgrade, and they gave me a completely new unit. Good customer service too that makes me loyal to them.:goodvibes:

Dane, I'm not sure that I know what you mean by that, but for the sake of this thread, all I want is recommendations on a good radar detector. Other thoughts can be saved for a different time.

                      Peace

I agree on the service too as I think Mike started the whole game long ago. They did the same replacement on mine once and it was one of the original units. No repair charge and even shipped it back to me free. Unreal.

The back side detection has saved my back side a few times too...

I also love my Valentine 1, though its gone unused for the last 5 years since I moved to PA.

Local police prefer visual clocking for speeders, so radar detector is useless.

Hey Mike -- my reply you quoted was replying to droht's comment to me.. though I do still believe it is a valid thought pertaining to all of life's decisions..

I'm not wanting to get in a big :boxer: here though.. just don't understand the popularity of these things except for giving people a false reason to break the speed limit and think it's okay.. that's just my opinion though.. :embarass:

I live within 5 miles of where both these companies are located. As such, I've had ample opportunities to try, upgrade, and use, both.

I still have a V1, but use the Escort (9500) day-in/day-out. Only one reason....the V1 may have somewhat better range (even that's debatable). But, the V1 falses WAY TOO MUCH. To the point where I sometimes ignore it (especially in areas where there are a lot of businesses). So, that fact alone pushes me to the Escort. 9 times out of 10, if it goes off, there's radar nearby (with Laser, you hope the guy in front of you got caught). Those places where the Escort sends off a "false" signal, can be noted and saved into memory.

While it's taking awhile, speed and red light cameras are becoming more prevalent. You can find them with the Escort.
