  • Oregon GTG

    Hello all,

Just a quick heads up gang, the Oregon GTG is 2 weeks out. Here is the original threat over at AV123: http://www.av123forum.com/showthread.php?t=39364

If you'd like to attend, shoot me a PM over at the AV123 forum with your email address and I'll send you the invitation flyer.

Mark, Jess and Scott will all be in attendance, and we'll have a full Rocket System, X-Statics and ELT525T. We should also have some Aperion speakers there as well as a bunch of other gear folks are bringing.

    Hope to see you there!

    Best,

    Darren

Darren - Not that I can come but I am interested in the setups you will be having at the GTG. Are you planning on running MFW-15's with the full Rocket system?

At least 1 MWF with my 1000's. Someone may bring a second one, which will be a great deal of fun if it happens...but even with just one and the 1000's, it's quite thunderous. 2 will be just nuts

2 is fun :dizzy: If I had a big truck I'd bring one of mine but, alas, I don't. Oh, Lisa (my wife) is probably going to stop by for a bit too with her mom but doubt they'll be there for food. Just FYI.

The plan is that there will be two MFW-15s at the GTG.

            It's comming together...

Well..this weekend I made the trip out to the Yellow terminal for a care package from AV123...

Just barely fit in my truck...

I got everything home and setup...

I've been breaking in all the speakers now and should have at least 48 hours on everything before the GTG.

Things are starting to really sound good. I had the day off yesterday, and watched the extended editions of Fellowship of the Ring and Two Towers. Let me just say that wow, the X-Statics can really hold their own for home theater.

Jess also suprised me by sending not only an X-sub, but an additional MFW15 and some X-Omni's. The 2 MFW's sound crazy good down there and rseynaev can save his back by not having to lug his from home now. Unless we really want to hear what 3 sound like <evil cackle>.

Looking forward to the GTG, I even picked up a speaker switch from Monster to do some A/B/C/D compares or even some blind testing if we want. We'll of course listen to them without switch in line as well, but will be fun to see if folks can tell which ones are which...

Yeah, I just forgot to write back on here about it :D I've got pics at home too that I need to post from the event. Not a ton, but a few.

Darren did a great job setting this up. He's got a beautiful house and set up lots of good grub for us all to feed our faces with :clapper:

More importantly, he had everything set up really well. We had roughly 10-12 people show up throughout the day and I think everyone spent a fair amount of time in both of the rooms that were set up.

Upstairs a pair of Ref1's in GORGEOUS PBEM and a set of ELT525T's in Rosewood were set up. They were powered by an NAD SACD player, Manley preamp, and a pair of Odyssey monoblock amps. It was really a terrific sounding setup and I really enjoyed listening to the differences between the two speakers. Both had a very different presentation of the music and I was surprised at just how much bass response the ELT's had. I'd never seen nor heard them before and I REALLY liked them!

Downstairs were Rocket 1k's and Bigfoot, X-Statik's, X-Omni's and X-Voce as well as dual MFW-15's. Darren has a great basement theater with a three seat setup for the first row and a couch on a riser for the second row. The room really gave each set of speakers an opportunity to show their stuff both with and without the MFW's for moral support. It was my first time with the Omni's as well and I was extremely impressed with how they sounded. Their soundstage was simply engulfing and filled such a huge space. I was really amazed at how open they were yet how accurately the presented the image.

Thanks again to Darren for hosting this and letting me bring my Father-in-law and my son. We all had a great time and would definitely come down again if he decides to do it again!

I didn't get to listen to them without the subs so I wasn't able to hear what they could do full range. I did like what I heard, though. They have good impact and resolution. Imaging was spot on as well. I'll let someone else with more time with them than I had chime in, though. My sit down was very brief.

The GTG was really great. Sorry for the slow turnaround on Pictures, but here they are finally.

I'm going to really miss that second MFW15, but Ptn72 is saving me from myself by picking it up this week. I really did come to appreciate the X-statics, and I think they make a really solid Home Theater speaker. The imaging is just amazing, and the only think they lack is quite the visceral punch the rockets have but they paint such a soundscape, I'm going to miss them. The X-omni's were a pleasant surprise. I didn't realize Jess was sending them, and they make really nice 2 channel speakers for music, but the real surprise was what an amazing surround speaker they are...that are just incredible. I'm seriously contemplating replacing the 300's with some x-omni's instead. They are really amazing for that omnidirectional ambient sound on the sides.

So, without further ado, here are some pictures of the GTG. There are more pic's up on my photobucket album you can see here: http://s292.photobucket.com/albums/m.../Oregon%20GTG/ but here are some of the highlights...

                            First, the mancave, with Directions...

GeorgeH was kind enough to bring his beautiful Ref1's and his Manley Shrimp and Odesy Khartago's...they sounded amazing

Scott and Jess attended, but Scott snuck out before I could get his picture...but here is Jess

and of course the rest of the gang chit-chatting and eating some food...listening is hard work...

Thanks again to everyone who attended. We'll have to do this again soon!

I finally took the SB MFW-15 home last night and it'd join our bedroom system soon. Here are my thoughts for Oregon GTG. I don't have golden ears so please take my observations with a grain of salt.

First of all, a big 'Thank you' to Darren and his wife. They opened their beautiful home and fed us real well through out the day. He also provided us with a great opportunity to A/B many speakers in the same setting.

RS1K vs. X-statics: Jess played many music tracks while Darren put X-statics through many movie clips. Nice clean high with surprisingly good amount of bass (consider -3db at 65 Hz). For a while, X-statics were on their own without MWF-15s and they did just fine. RS1K however had a bit more oomph in the midrange so movie clips sounded a little better. I didn't have a chance to listen to music on RS1K. If both of them are at the same price, I'll take RS1K. At their current prices, I'll take the X-statics.

Ref1: GeorgeH had a killer 2-channel setup. Thanks for bringing them. The reason I wanted to hear Ref1 because I ran out of room for my Maggies MG12 and planned to replace them with monitor speakers. They are great speakers. I love their crystal clean high, nice bass and great imaging. We were listening to Pink Floyd, Pink Martini, Steely Dan ... and the music was awesome. I was all set on selling my MG12 and buying a used pair of Ref1 until I got a nice surprise present at the end of the day. The BEM finish was stunning.

X-omni: this was a nice surprise. If I start all over again, I'll get these as my surround speakers. Their small foot print made them ideal for surround placement. Their sound quality was a notch above RSS300. We were watching the opening scenes of Open Range where it rained and I could tell the differences between them.

Highlight of the day: I won the pair of ELT525M from the raffle and Jess gave me a great deal on MFW-15 (my third). I'll listen to them for a while. I may keep them or sell them along with MG12 to fund Ref1. It's going to be fun.

Final thought: it was great spending a day with people sharing the same hobby and listening to many speakers. Thank Jess and Scott for coming out and sending the goodies. I'm looking forward to the next GTG.

                              Phong
