  • X-Tatic Owners

I'm a soon to be owner of a pair of these. I will pick these up in Longmont this weekend.

I currently have a set of Magnepans that the x-tatics are going to replace. I keep hearing of this mid bass slam every forum I go to and the maggies just dont do that as far as I know. I have always loved the open sound of the Maggies, and swore I would never go box again. However, the x-tatic seems to be a different breed than a normal box, and reviews I have read have been extremely positive. We are talking 90% home theater use.

I picked up 3 of the onix x-cs speakers on the av123 forums a couple months ago, for front and surround duty. I know I should have held out for an x-voce probably, but this is what I will have to work with for a year or so.

Sooo, will I be happy with the x-tatics? I'm sure I will but I dont get around like a lot of you people. Everything I do I have to literally do from the internet and take people's word for things.

How long of a break in period will these have to go through? Do I play them soft or loud to break them in?

I already know with the Maggies, about plenty of breathing room, and these are all downstair in the Man-Cave, where there is no such thing as WAF. That room is all mine and she doesnt care what I do except I get in trouble sometimes already with the mfw-15's late at night

Anyway, just asking for advice or a few tips from you egg-spurts out there in audio land. Thanks.

I really feel strongly that the X-Statik's are very underrated as far as home theater use. I use my Statik's/Voce for 99.9% home theater and LOVE them.

I noticed a decent difference in sound (especially with the Voce) after about 120 hours of use or so. This obviously may vary per set up.

I believe you will be very happy with the Statik's once you get them. I have an Emotiva XPA-3 arriving today that will hopefully bring the Statik's to a whole new level. I can't wait to get home today to hook it up.....

    Hope this helps...

We use x-statiks as mains in our music/HT system. For music we love 2.1, using the x-statiks and an MFW-15. (I've blown many friends away by demoing this 2.1 system, and I bet av123 will get some sales from these folks.)

For DVDs we love our x-cs-enc center. We still have a CRT TV, so we needed a shielded center. The x-statiks do great as HT mains.

The MFW-15, of course, handles all the sub effects--with music and HT--with both subtlety and greatness, depending on what's called for.

Our surrounds are our former bookshelf mains, but I'm waiting for new av123 surrounds to replace them. I'd like to match the cherry finish of all the other av123 speakers. We have a 5.1 system, and we'll keep it that way until we move or more movies start being engineered as 7.1.

Speaker break-in? So far I'm not a believer in it. (And I do NOT believe in cable or interconnect break-in!) I do not believe in amp break-in, either.

I'm a regular on the Audioholics forum, too, and you can do a speaker break-in search there.

I know people with more audio experience than I have who believe in speaker break-in. I also have read many people with more experience than I have who don't believe in speaker break-in, or, if they do, they say say it happens within the first second of a speaker's playing as some of the cone's glue cracks. No long break-in period necessary.

I tend toward the Audioholics' site view, which is that speaker break-in is something your mind gets used to, rather than a real sound change in the speakers. But I haven't owned enough speakers to have made my definitive decision.

I loved my x-statiks from the start, and told MLS just that. YMMV.

I could use a little help from you guys. I am unboxing my x-tatics right now as I post. I have a Marantz 5003 that I was using to drive the center and two surrounds. I used an Adcom amp to drive my two Magnepans since they are 4 ohm.

Now, since I am all av123 speakers now, (2 x-tatics and 3 x-cs) should I still use the adcom to power the main left and right or not?

Also, should I leave the floor spikes off until I find where I like the x-tats or put them on to start with and fight moving them? I have never had a speaker with spikes before. Thanks. Ill come back and check in a while and post some pics at some point too.

          Hi Rondar,

Congrats on your x-statiks. I am loving mine still.

You are on the right track it sounds like. I would keep the amp (assuming it is not <50wpc) in the system.
As for spikes they can wait until you have played with position a bit if the choice is between testing positions vs not. My room is carpeted and I added the spikes right away so they would be stable for my kid. I can still 'walk' them around carefully with spikes in but that isnt a gret option for wood floors.

          Have fun.

We started with the floor spikes on. Then we took them off. The speakers sit on a hardwood floor, and it was too much of a PITA to slide all the discs around whenever we moved a speaker an inch or two. In place of the spikes, we added thick felt furniture stick-on pads to the base of the x-statiks. They work great, and we don't have to worry about scratching our relatively new hardwood floor.

BTW, we added the same felt pads to the MFW-15. We made sure the pattern gave equal support to all parts of the bottom. In other words, we didn't just stick four pads at each outer corner.

As for the amp, how many wpc is it? If it's 100 or above, I'd recommend using it.

My x-statiks did well in the beginning with our trusty 100-wpc Yammy 659 AVR. But sometimes I like really loud music, such as when I'm a room or two away doing something. Adding a 200-wpc external amp made a huge difference when I played loud music. I chose a model that would drive all my speakers, but one for just your mains would be good, too.

Here's a couple of pics (lousy I might add because I dont know how to take good pics :) ) of my x-tatics beside my magnepan smga's. I love the sound of the xtatics and right now the maggies are in storage.

The finish is palisander natural satin.

I'm picking up a set this weekend along with a MFW..

Can't wait to get em.. I need to pick up an x-voce and some rear channels now. I already have my ELT's sold to a buddy after a couple of months of owning I'm kinda sad to see them go. But upgrade-itis has struck once again. I'm sure after a few months with these I'll be getting some LS6's

Man, I'm telling ya, I really thought about doing this but my buddy is buying me an HR23 and paying for a full year of Premier on Directv. So I can't really complain! :)

I am going to hook them up in stereo but I'm also on the lookout for an SP3 after I get the X-Voce and either the X-Omnis or X-SLS...

BTW, who's got opinions on those two? I'm undecided which ones to go with... and may make a topic about it.. :D
