  • Weird computer pointer problem

For the last week my Windows 7 computer selects stuff all by itself whether on the desktop, in the browser or in applications like Paintshop pro. Bookmarks are picked as I pass over them, I can't use certain tools because they select at anytime and programs open as I pass over them!!!

"Activate a window by hovering over it with a mouse" is unchecked in the ease of access center. I also unchecked a similar item in the start up menu customization menu. I also foundnd and used something to restore the Window default hover in the registry . My problem persists, help!!

System Restore works wonders for computer problems that are not easily fixable. :D

Have you scanned for viruses and malware?

Did you notice this after any certain program or driver installation?
If so I would uninstall that particular item.

      What sort of mouse?
      Current drivers?

You may want to try CCleaner to see if it's just some left over crap in your registry. This comes at some risk, but I've never experienced any issues with this. I've never ran CCleaner on anything but XP though, so my experience is lacking in your situation.

If none of the above apply or interest you, then I agree with the above poster, use system restore to a known time that this problem didn't exist.

When trying to figure out what may have caused a certain problem with your computer, it's best to try and remember exactly when the problem first started. If you can do that, then try and remember what you may have done at or around that specific period of time, that may have caused this problem. Such as was suggested earlier. Maybe a new driver was installed. Windows Update if you have it set to automatically install new updates, may have installed something that could be causing the problem. I've had that happen before, it's rare but it can happen.

You could try using a different mouse and see if that helps. Maybe there's a setting in the mouse properties that is causing this issue. You can check for that in the control panel. If it's a USB mouse, you could try unplugging it and then plugging it right back in.

What kind of mouse is it? If all else fails, and/or you don't want to deal with trying to fix it, System Restore does work great. Especially if you don't have to go back too far in time with it. A week isn't that far back.

Thanks for the suggestions. The only things I can think of that are new in the last week or so is a Windows update, running CCleaner for the registry and adding an HRT usb streamer... I have an up to date anti virus and have Spybot resident running so I don't it is malware or a virus.
Maybe I can remove the Windows update?

Did you have to install a USB device driver for the HRT?

            Is your pointing device USB?

The streamer was plug and play.

By pointer I mean the cursor arrow. It selects certain stuff all by itself although it doesn't select just anything it is hovering over. It is quite annoying but the computer is still usable...

I haven't tried anything yet, I have to mow the lawn and then I have to calculate how much I owe the gov't in value added tax... and then have supper with the mother in law.
              Fun :(

Is your mouse (pointing device) a USB device?

If so, it maybe interacting with the HST. Try using another USB port for the HST that is not on the same hub as the mouse.

The mouse is USB. I unplugged the streamer as per your suggestion. No change...

Did you try unplugging the mouse and plugging it back in as I suggested?

Also what type of mouse is it???? What brand etc. Did you try checking the settings in for the mouse in the control panel???

I finally got rid of the MIL :D. Unplugged and plugged back in. Didn't do the trick.

It is an HP usb mouse and I did check the settings in the control panel. I don't see anything that would help with my problem. The mouse is listed as functioning properly.

To isolate if it is the HP mouse or the computer, do you have another USB mouse you can try?

Not only trying another USB mouse but maybe even a different USB port or maybe even try a PS2 mouse. You could also try uninstalling the drivers for the mouse.

If all this fails.... System Restore :woo:

I just tried a Logitech mouse and still have the problem. I have been re applying the "restore default hover" in the registry each time I change something...

I think I have it. I removed three of four Windows updates I did on July 13. Everything seems back to normal now.
