  • power plug 2 romex

Hey guys, I bought a pool table light thinking that it would just hook up like a normal light fixture and have a power, neutral, and ground wire and just fit. Well, the light just shipped today and it actually has a power cord... 3 pronger for an outlet. Do I have to install an outlet in my ceiling and plug this in...? or can I just cut the plug off and hook the wires up to my romex in the ceiling?

    Thanks

Cut the plug. You are getting the same juice the only difference is the type of connection.

That's probably not to code. You'd need an outlet.

However, just check the cord as you use the light. To make sure it doesn't get to hot.

Thanks, will do. I won't have a cover on it at first anyhow, just the standard hole that is made from installing a light fixture. I'll cap it off when I get around to it

I don't know if it is to code and I am not an electrician but I have installed a gazillion light fixtures and I would venture to say that there is zero risk. You are drawing the same amount of juice whether it is a fixed connection or a plug. There is no reason for the wire to heat. Just make a nice connection with wire nuts. I'd think you'd at least want to put the connections (wire nuts) inside a junction box.

Indeed I am assuming that there is not just a wire hanging out of the ceiling. If this is the case it will be just as easy to install a receptacle box as a junction box.

If someone is hyper about this, you can get a blank cover and put a cable retainer in the center after drilling a hole for it's size. That is after using wire nuts in the box. Containment in a box is to prevent any potential sparks from getting to combustable materials.
