  • The entitlement mentality

What do people think of the Michigan Lottery Winner who took home 850K a couple of years ago but [legally] continued using food stamps. The lottery winner indicates that he broke no rules and just wants what he's entitled to. [paraphrase]

Personally this burns me up to the point that I'd rather chuck out the entire entitlement system and start over if stuff like this is legal. How hard is it to set up reasonable regulations on entitlement programs .... means testing guys .. come on ... duh!!!!!!

Ok asking politicians of any party to do something reasonable is not likely going to go very far.

    ************************************************** ****

This whole thing got me thinking though. Is the "entitlement mentality" ... I.E. "I don't care as long as I get my foodstamps" sort of thought process one of the most dangerous things to the long term health of our republic???

Edit: This was the last post in a now close thread an I wanted to discuss this issue further.

    Yes.

The essence of the entitlement mentality is the belief that individuals deserve the things necessary to live such as money, food, housing and employment; simply because they need them. They don't care who pays for it or where they get it as long as they do.

If you think about it, the past few years this has come to light even more. Those who have mortgages that they should known they could not afford, credit card balances, etc but spend anyway without worrying about where the payment is coming from.

Sometimes I feel that politicians get caught up in the you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours ideology: regarding voter bases and handouts.

Pretty much: make a living, live within your means, don't be a burden on society if you ARE ABLE. (Like the takers/payers, there will always be those in society that need help, but FAR TOO MANY are going the lazy ass, entitlement route).

I'm not sure what this "gentleman" is thinking, if his reason is a sense of entitlement or if he is just really tight and greedy. I was recently in a situation where I am sure that I would have been "eligible" for food stamps. It never even crossed my mind to go there. I have savings and that was enough to get me through until I got back on my feet. $2mil, and this guy, not only does he not consider ditching the assistance, he tries to justify his position, ffs.

I read the comments section below the news article that Craig posted in the other thread, and see people chiming in that may very well need assistance, but have been turned down for one reason or another. This is in Michigan, of all places, where many people are down and in need. It doesn't make a lot of sense, I hope they fix the loop hole that allows this.

I agree with most of what you post so no disagreement there.

I was going to ramble on but this sort of things gets me so upset that the ability to think rationally eludes me :)

I will say though "a pox on all their houses" ... at least for the "gimme gimme" folks and the people that enable what is in my opinion terrible civic behavior.

I definitely understand where this thread is coming from. I am on the phones with tax burdens (low income, little to no fica having citizens) right now. The last caller was arguing with me that she has not gotten any of "her" real money back yet. And she is waiting for her remaining refund.

Now this tax burden has a withholding of $62. She got back over $3,000 already. And she was waiting for a remaining $5,000 back for other credits. Turns out the entire return is fraudulent. Yet she has an attitude and states were are robbing her of "her" money. It blows my mind how much money the IRS throws at tax burdens each year who give nothing to the system.

Others tax burdens with no withholding for the year are getting $100,000 refunds for the adoption credits. We have no way to really verify what's going on. So we just release the money for a few shreds of evidence.

Then there's the endless First Time Homebuyer Credit tax burdens who claim they have purchased a new home though they have less than $1,000 of income on file for the year. We are not allowed to question their pathetic financial status and how could someone afford a home when they are making $10,000 or less a year. So we just shell out the money for that as well.

Then these tax burdens have the nerve to want exact figures for how much interest they will receive along with a fairy tale refund of money they never put into the Federal government in the first place. It's disgusting.
          I came, I saw, I purchased.
