Why do Movie box offices count in dollars and not ticket sales ?

Of course more recent movie releases will break box office records when it costs more all the time to go to the movies.

So they can report new box office records and get free possitive press for their dying industry?

The other trick they started using is to release movies earlier. The 12am releases came first instead of the usual Friday evenings, then the Thursday release came around (including the Wednesday/Thursday 12am release). I suppose if the movie has the hype to do well, a couple headlines with large $$ figures could only help when they release the "weekend" numbers on Monday.
