I don't know if this seller or this exact software is legit.
But if the question is.... Is a Dell branded copy of Microsoft XP that has a key code that has never been activated and is being sold by a third party legit ? .... the answer is more or less yes.
This is the OEM (system builder version of the operating system), it is supposed to be sold along with either a hard drive or a motherboard/CPU purchase. There is so much more hardware sold by any vendor than operating systems the requirement that the OS be sold with hardware is easily met on their books.
When the switch to Vista came along the extra copies of XP made their way to the surplus sales and eventually in this case to Ebay.
Since it is the OEM version there will be no support from Microsoft, since it is not being sold by Dell there will be no support from Dell.
If I wanted a copy of XP I would have to decide if I trusted the seller to be selling a keycode that has not been pirated. -
Will a Dell XP disk install on something other than a Dell?
I've wiped and clean installed about 35 or so computers over the last several months. Many of them Dell's, and I have a Dell copy of Pro and Home that I have slip streamed SP3 onto for those occasions I reload a Dell computer, which is often. Any Dell that has the XP sticker on it can use any "Dell" disk as it is tied to the BIOS.
Can't say I've ever tried to install a Dell OEM XP onto anything but a Dell. I also wouldn't rule out it working just fine...but then again, this is the same company that, for a long time, chose to re-pin there power supply connectors.Comment

It looks completely legit to me. But the price is a ripoff!
You could get Windows 7 for just a little bit more.
I've been tempted to sell 1 of my 3 unused copies of XP for quite some time now. If you're interested, I'll definitely sell it to you for cheaper than that ebayer. :)Comment

Just wanted to say that I am worse than a woman:(. I was going to get this and then realized that I could run win7 on my machine and could get it for $100. I apologize to Boober for that.
And then my wife told me that she wanted her OS in French (her mother tongue). So I am back to square one:doh! 1:. Sorry for the bother and apologies again to Boober.Comment

As I said earlier, Windows 7 is not much more and it is alot better than XP, so you're really making the right decision. :salute:Comment

I suppose I should get with it myself. I have five copies of Win7, but all of my machines, except one, is still on XP Pro.Comment

For example, over the weekend she needed a little help with what she was doing. I was watching her thinking "wow she finally understands how the tabs work in Chrome". Nothing fancy, just understanding that you can have tabs with different web pages open. And then a little later she lets out a profanity because the "stupid computer" didn't save the webmail she was working on. Long story short: she doesn't get the tabs yet!:doh! 1:Comment

I struggle with this all the time...
Windows is the hardest OS to maintain, but users are most familiar with it. At what point does retraining overcome maintenance? I have been so glad that my mother and grandmother had macintosh computers because supporting windows would have been a nightmare...
