I grew up in a river valley floodplain, we used to get out of school to sandbag regularly. Local bars put out kegs in the street in gratitude, and no one denied even the young'uns a beer or two. Great farmland, but what a hassle. The power of a raging river is nothing to trifle with, I've witnessed people try and lose. Trying to drive through rising waters, grabbing vehicles, personal possessions... some won't even leave their homes, thinking they can ride it out.

I now live above the local 500 year floodplain. I ain't playing with that stuff anymore, it is such a mess to clean up afterwards. I feel for those folks in Queensland.
