  • Wine Aerator?

    A coworker of mine was talking today of this device that apparently makes cheap wine taste better and decent wine taste smoother....

    The Vinturi!



    Already have a decanter, but looks fun.

    Any opinions? Might add it to the downstairs bar "component" list.

      My sister got one of these for Christmas. I'm not a red-wine drinker, but we tried it on some moderately-priced pinot noir, and it definitely changed the flavor. Made it hit more immediate and it wasn't as 'vinegary'.

          Essentially it's designed to speed up the breathing process from a few minutes to a couple seconds.

                I don't think their is any magical thinking involved.
                Wine is a biologic material that reacts with oxygen, that is oxidizes.
                When it oxidizes the flavor can change -- either unnoticeably or substantially.
                I think this just makes it faster.

                My neighbor has that particular aerator, but I haven't experienced it.

                You could easily take the same wine and do a blinded A/B test with non-aerated wine and aerated wine and see if you taste a difference.

                      As a chemistry professor and owner of this device, I can assure you that it's intent is not to oxidize the wine. The oxidation of wine, or more specifically the ethanol in the wine, leads to acetic acid. Acetic acid is the major ingredient in vinegar and gives that product its signature sharp taste. This may be nice on a salad, but not in a wine. It is my understanding that the purpose of using this device is to "open up" and allow the red wine to breathe. Many different compounds or molecules make up the flavors in red wine. Most of them good, a few not so good. The aeration process will remove, or partially remove the more volatile, lower molecular weight (smaller) molecules. Unfortunately, simply pulling the cork out of the bottle and expecting it to breathe through such a small opening with its limited air/liquid surface area will not do much to change the wine. That is why the wine experts first pour their wine into decanters with its large surface area between the air and red wine, and then wait for the wine to open up. The aerator does this same thing in about 30 seconds. Swirling helps accomplish the same thing. And yes, you do have to know this for the test...

                              I've been using my vinturi for a year now and I just got the stand this christmas.

                              I love it.

                              Though, I wonder if the "white wine" version is just snake oil. From what the experts have told me, white wine doesn't need a ton of aeration. And I don't see why if you want some, you can't use the red wine version.

                              If you're liking what this thing does for wines, try buying some nice glasses that are meant for the type of wine you're drinking. Glasses of certain shapes cause wines to hit different parts of your tongue, enhancing the right flavor.
