Different than Band of Brothers, certainly, but that's inevitable considering the dramatic differences between the two theaters of war. It is very good, though.
I felt the with The Pacific was that Pacific theater was just too big to try cover in a single, 10-part series. We're talking about 3 year campaign ('42-'45) that covered a huge area of the planet. In BoB, they dealt with a 10 or 11month period that took place over a relatively small land area, and followed one unit that was involved all the time.
They probably could have gotten up to ten 10-part series out of the Pacific theater.
They could have done an entire series (some shorter than others) on each of the following...
The coral Sea and Midway battles
Guadalcanal
Tarawa
The Marshalls
The Marianas
New Guinea
Pelilieu
The Phillipines
Iwo Jima
Okinawa
Of course, they wanted to stick to the pattern of following specific characters, real people, as they did in Band of Brothers, which is why, I suspect, they did it the way they did.
