I think my HTS thread has a mini-review of the AP850 MasterPro Reference Pair 8" Patio Speakers.
I have scattered links and info on Outdoor speakers.
An outdoor speaker FAQ for HTS is on my "To Do" list.

You can also check out this post in my AVS HT build thread:
        Link

That has a lot of links including to other AVS threads.
However, even at AVS the number of threads is small and professional reviews are rare.

I started up this FAQ at HTS where I will try to assemble a lot of disparate links...
          HTS FAQ thread

It will take me a little while to clean it up and then add to it...

Mike has been more then helpful in the outdoor speaker department. Not that I have anything to compare them to, but I purchased 2 pairs of the Def Tech AW6500 and they fill my pool, deck and back yard nicely. They sound good and have surprising bass response, considering the 15 year old kenwood receiver I am running them with. In addition, they are very easy to install. I would recommend them to anyone, I have them sitting under the soffit below my gutter's to keep the majoraty of the weather off of them. If you want PM me and I will give you the contact info of the Def Tech Authorized Etailer I bought them from.

                RE: amps
You can use multi-channel amps (eg Russound, Niles, etc) purposed for the task or extra channels on AVRs or separate amps or AVRs.

Some setups have 70v amps for the task.
Check out here as one source of info...
The 70V ceiling speakers from Outdoor Speaker Depot are very popular for commercial applications and have a built-in transformer for multiple applications.

The AVR or pre-amp/pro you choose is not really relevant to the topic of outdoor speakers, so I'd search those threads on AVRs or start a new thread to ask those specific questions.
