  • Avoid Zorn, Anderson,Reed

I had tickets to see Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed and John Zorn. I really enjoyed Laurie Anderson when I was younger and like Lou Reed (sometimes). No idea about John Zorn. The concert was in the big amphitheater at Place Des Arts during the Jazz Festival. Prestigious location. I was hyped for this expecting something off the wall but very entertaining. It was total, unadulterated, pretentious crap. Loud ear piercing crap. My SO, and many other people, plugged their ears. The "music" had the appeal of a satanic symphony orchestra warming up and tuning their instruments at earsplitting spl. I got through the first "song", about 8 minutes. To my surprise there was some applause, I was ready to boo them. I have never before thought of doing that. One minute into the second "song", more of the same crap, I say to the SO "let's leave". We went outside and there was a steady stream of people leaving. WTF??? Why do musicians do this stuff? We gave them a rousing welcome, we shelled out (a fair amount) of our hard earned money and they serve up some self serving, pretentious noise instead of some of the great stuff we love them for...:hissyfit:. If this comes to your town run for the hills.

This critic kinda liked it calling it "marvelous noise".

    Sorry I needed to vent:o.

That sucks Stephen, It is a bummer when you are excited about something and it turns out to be a waste of your hard earned cash and your time.

Apparently some people got a refund. I'm going to try my luck...
It was really dreadful. Lou Reed looked like the walking dead...

Laurie kind of defines "avant garde", sounds like they took it a little too far. Take solace in the fact that your review made my laugh my ass off.

First of all, I love(d) Lou Reed, and at one point he would have been in my top 10 artists, but he was without a doubt the worst concert experience I have ever been involved with and I have seen way too many concerts to even remember.

I was so pumped to see the guy and he comes out on stage plays about half of a song, stops the band and says angrily that he will come back on stage once everybody is done getting drinks and is seated at their seat. WTF? So an hour goes by and people begin to think he is cancelling the show and all of the sudden the lights go dark, he comes out and does a 20 minute rendition of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" and then a feedback driven song that he is "experimenting" with. Thats it. He is gone. No thanks for coming, no refund, no popular songs, no songs that even his biggest fans would know, just a really terrible night with 3-ish songs. The guy lost a big fan that night, but I am going to guess he doesn't give a $h*t. I have seen good concerts, ok concerts and bad concerts. Lou Reed was on another level.

i love this kinda stuff... :S

but then again, i went to a free jazz show once where there was a 6 piece combo that jammed out on just c# the whole night... 3 hours of it...

btw that is just c# the single note, and any octaves of, not c# minor/major/dim/etc. just c# the note...

            and i loved it... lol

course, i can easily enjoy that kinda stuff with a few beers..

buuuuut that all being said, i know what its like to be really pumped to see a show and to just be completely let down by either mediocrity or just plain stupidity/lunacy. So i can empathize with your feelings..

Still think Craig is in the "Chase" for that sense of humour. :neener 1:

I e-mailed the folks at the Jazz Fest and got a prompt and courteous reply (this organization is topnotch). They turned me down for a refund( I would of had to have gotten the refund as I exited the concert). They however offered free tickets to our choice of one of 6 concerts. They have kept a fan.:thanks 1:

Not at all the same, but once upon a time I went to a Poison/Slaughter/Bullet Boys concert. Bullet Boys opened and no one paid any attention at all. Slaughter was actually pretty good. Poison was really ragged... we all piled into the Trans Am and headed out while they were still taking curtain calls.

Ahhh, the 80s. I miss you so!

So I'm going to see Andrew Bird. It looks fantastic.

And kudos to the Jazz Festival organization. I just e-mailed them with my name and my gripe and I now have tickets waiting for me in my name at the press table. No bureaucratic run around, bring copies of your receipts, jump through the hoop. Just "Sorry for the inconvenience Mr Django1" your tickets are waiting for you".:applause:

Lou has looked like that since leaving the womb. Bummer on the show, hope you enjoy Andy Bird.
