  • The best laid plans - phone, internet, entertainment ramblings

    Just my mindless ramblings...

You guys that know me know that I am a tight wad, cheap ass, etc.
My entertainment/communication costs have been pretty low: home phone, basic dsl, netflix, and pandora. No cable/satellite or cell phone.
Well, netflix came out with streaming for the wii and that made it pretty convenient to watch on the tv and they have lots of stuff for the kids. Anyway, decided to upgrade the internet. Looking at the phone bill I was paying basically $20 for dsl, $20 for local only phone line, and $10 in phone taxes (yeah 50% tax on the phone). They had a good deal on a lifetime price of $30 for 3 mb DSL and I found phone.com with around $12/month phone service. So I figure upgrade the DSL, go with the VOIP phone and actually save money. I upgrade the DSL and order the phone.com kit. The VOIP phone works well so I call to turn off the home phone line. Yeah, here comes the catch. Turns out that Verizon is giving you a "discount" on DSL when you have phone service. Going dry with 1 mb service is $40ish a month and 3 mb is over $50. :saywhat: Yeah, so I am looking like a big :loser: with my plan in the :toilet:.
Verizon throws me a bone by giving me a $5 discount on the internet for 12 months and I was able to switch to measured service on the phone line, so I ended up coming out okay.

Ahh Yeah ... cheap ass ... a man after my own heart, but I prefer the term "physically responsible"

    Entertainment Stats Here:

    Dial up Internet
27" CRT television (over the air DTV with rooftop antenna)
    Cheapo Magnavox DVD player/recorder
6 year old cellphone with no camera or text pad.
2 Channel Audio System with 5-25 year old components)

    Confession:

Spent too much disposable income on Ham Radio Toys in recent years to afford HT & phone goodies right now.:sigh:
 Long live draft beer and good old rock 'n roll :grinning:

Or even fiscally responsible. My sorta-mother decided, after a convincing TV ad, that Vonage was the way to save money - Ordered the kit, called Quest and canceled the land line (DSL interwebs).

Took 20 minutes to explain why her choices couldn't possibly work to her satisfaction.

Not really on topic am I.
dragged down by the the stone

Ugh, that sucks, hope Vonage gave her a refund.

I ditched my cell phone years ago, got Road Runner ISP and Vonage for the same price as the cell, around $60/month for both.

My 27" CRT with free OTA DTV works great..... cause I never watch TV. All my money goes towards my 2 channel fix. :toilet:
