  • iTunes 9.1: Automatic Bitrate Conversion

Just in case anyone was interested, iTunes 9.1 update adds the option to turn on automatic bitrate conversion to 128kbps AAC files when you add songs from iTunes to your iPod.

This means that your lossless (or higher bitrate MP3s) will be left intact on your computer, and automatically converted to a lesser bitrate without using more memory on your hard drive.

I know that there are those who are very against lossy formats, so the disclaimer is this is optional. I don't need lossless when I plug my ipod into my car speakers.

For me, I've been waiting for a MediaMonkey Mac version for this feature, but now it's all good! Granted, I would prefer we be able to control the bitrate it gets converted to, but this is better than nothing. I can use my 16gb iPod Touch again to listen to music!

      J. River Media Center has had this feature for about 5 years now. It is nice because you can set it on a per device basis. For example, if your cell phone only uses WMA file, it will transcode on the fly to WMA when syncing to the cell phone. If your PDA uses MP3, then it will transcode to MP3 for the PDA. You just need one library with all your lossless files.

As a disclaimer, I have been using JRMC since version 9. They just released the beta for version 15. I just recently received beta tester status. :applause: It means little other than that I now have access to the beta forum and can get daily updates instead of the normal weekly updates that incorporate the daily changes.

Now if they would just add FLAC support everything I have would play nicely.
