  • Monoprice hacked?

If you've shopped at Monoprice in the past you might want to keep an eye on your charge card activity.

    Monoprice

Just happened to be looking for some 90 degree HDMI cables and wondered why the site had been down during the first part of the week. From reading other forums it seems it has been down for days, some report almost a week so it sure sounds like something more severe happened than they may be letting on.

Here is their statement on the first page:

A few of our customers recently reported to us that information from credit cards they used on the Monoprice website had been misused. We promptly began an investigation with the help of expert computer forensic investigators to determine if any card data had been stolen from our computers.

To date, the investigators have found no evidence that card information has been stolen from Monoprice’s computer network. As a precaution to ensure that our customers’ information is not at risk, we have taken our website offline temporarily while we and our investigators complete the audit of our computer network.

We want to ensure that there is no security vulnerability in any part of our computer network system. We notified local and federal law enforcement agencies, our credit card processing business partners, and all credit card companies that some of our customers reported concerns regarding their card information to us.

We also advised these entities that we are working with outside security specialists to determine if there was breach of our computer system. We will post additional information when it is available. We regret any inconvenience that our investigation and the temporary suspension of the Monoprice website may have caused you. Thank you so much for your great support.

To me this sounds less hackish and more fraud related or inside job kinda stuff...

*speaking as a guy who has been in the IT world in a variety of capacities including information security for a large banking institution*

Some of the guys over at anandtech home theater section indicate they are using the paypal option to purchase for the time being. Not sure this is really "safer" considering it's paypal but it's likely a better option than keying in your CC info currently.

Interesting you mentioning this, because I think I have always used paypal when purchasing with monoprice. I think I just do it because I can have all my account info easily memorized, whereas I don't have my credit card # memorized.

I bought a few things from Monoprice a couple of weeks ago and hoped I wouldn't be effected by this. WELL not so, I just got off the phone w/ my bank and sure enough I have had a three unauthotrized charges to my card. I tried to go to Monopice.com and the site is down. Word of warning, CHECK YOUR STATEMENTS!!! My bank is on top of it and I'll recover what was lost. I think I'll buy a pre-paid card from now on and order online that way.

Thanks for the warning. I know I have used paypal with them, but not sure if I ever used a card directly or not...

I also have purchased from monoprice, quite a bit in fact over the past 2 years. This month my credit card was charged for a carfax report once then 7 days later twice. Now, I use my card alot and can't exactly pinpoint it to monoprice, but I would make sure that you all check your cards before something big hits it. I am getting a new card and the charges are being re-versed so :applause: to me for the lettle hassle of calling them for 5 minutes and getting this rectified.

They got mine also. Started with a charge and a credit back for $100 at the beginning of the month of March then heavy activity from the end of March till yesterday. $300 is pending for one box call science (out of California) with a Skype charge of $14, $10 worth of charges in Montreal for babytel (whatever that is), and a $13 charge for netel. The $100 charge (was credited back the next day for some reason) at the beginning of March was for callmyworld.com and then there was a $26 charge that went through on 3/29/10 for bill.com. one box had a $49.95 charge and credit on 4/1/10 and the on 4/2/10 a charge of $49.95 went through with no credit back. Called and cancelled the card today as soon as I looked over my statement online. Supposedly the $75.95 thats already gone through will be credited back by the end of Mondays business. What a PITA

Hehe, that's a pic of me dressed up as Steve Prefontaine a couple years ago for Halloween. I had the short running shorts that went with it too. Quite a humorous costumer :applause:

                            TJ over :D

You could make a lot of nice friends in certain sectors of Montreal while dressed like that. Specially with the short shorts..:D
