I need to get a GPS dealio for $200 or less. I know absolutely nothing about them. I would like a user friendly model that just works well and has a decent sized screen. Bang for your buck is what I like.

    Suggestions?

I'm thinking of buying this one...
    http://www.amazon.com/TomTom-340-S-4...6154019&sr=8-1

$138 shipped. Is this a good one to start out with? If not, what is a good one?

    Thanks,
    Jethro

Jethro....I have had both TomTom and Garmin.....I prefer the Garmin!

The Tomtom had more direction errors for me. But they all are pretty good. My guess is the one you have listed would work great.

Cool. What Garmin would you recommend in that same price range?

I have no experience with the Tom Toms, so I can't say how good/bad they are.

I AM, however a big fan of the Garmin GPSs.

Check out the Garmin nuvi 255w

AT CNET, you should be able to find some information about the Tom Tom in which you interested so you can compare the two.

I have the Garmin 780 here, sometimes on special for less than $199:

We liked it so much that after researching to buy a second one we ended up getting the same thing again. MSNDirect is only nice if you're near a big city. It does not have lane assist which my Acura system (Alpine) does and the more expensive Garmin's also have.

I just purchased a Garmin Nuvi 265WT for my wife. So far she's happy with it - Good graphics, you can customize the turn-by-turn voice, automatic day/night mode, and it makes a pretty good hands free device for her blue tooth cell phone. Battery life is also good.

A cool feature is Points of Interest - looking for mexican food, a gas station, whatever, it's there.

                            Well spent $199.
