I live 20 minutes from Akron, about 1/2 way between Cleveland and Akron. That said, my life is lived mostly in the Cleveland area. Akron and Cleveland are so close together that they are effectively one metro.
Akron is OK, a rather sleepy place for such a mid-sized city IMHO. It is most definitely NOT dead like Flint, MI is. Even so, you'd do better living in the burbs between Akron and Cleveland. That way, you'd have a reasonable drive to work in Akron, and an equally reasonable drive to Cleveland, which is the life of NE Ohio, with the Browns/Indians/CAVS (woot), active nightlife, one of the best orchestras on the planet, lots and lots to do.
Cost of living is about the same as Detroit, maybe less.
HTH some!

I live close enough that I've been there a few times, but mostly driving through because I had friends (and a brother-in-law) at Kent State. Akron's not too bad, but it's mostly just a mix of industrial and college town stuff. The better areas are other cities nearby from what I've seen. Akron's not so big that it's tough to get in and out of, so you can live in one of those other towns and be within 20 minutes of the city. Perhaps more importantly, if you live just north of Akron you can be within an hour of Cleveland, and while I wouldn't want to live there, there's a ton to do in Cleveland. Three professional sports franchises as well as a couple of other lesser ones, a great theater district, one of the country's better art museums, a huge zoo, fantastic orchestra, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Science Center, The Flats, etc.
I'm far enough away that any jobs in Akron would require relocation. I can get there in under 1.5 hours if I'm pushing it, but in morning traffic and driving street level to get somewhere I'm sure it would be more. I'm looking primarily in the Columbus area.

Kevin, You DO realize, don't you, that if you take this job and come to this area, you must relinquish all allegiance to the Tigers, Lions, Pistons, and UofM, and swear allegiance to the Indians, Browns, Cavs, and (drum roll please) OHIO STATE!
As compensation, you may remain loyal to the Wings. :biglaugh:
P.S., About 58 years ago, I made the same transition (lived in Royal Oak at the time. It was a different town then)
Seriously Kev, should you make this move, like every other part of the country, there are some horrible things about the area, some absolutely wonderful things about it, and a whole bunch of stuff that falls somewhere in between. Largely, it will be what you make of it.
Wish you the best of luck and hope it turns out whatever way is best for you.Jack

Back just before and during the 9/11 era, I was working for Goodrich down in Uniontown, somewhere between Akron and Canton. I lived in a suburb of Cleveland approximately 10-15 minutes from downtown. My morning commute during rush hour was about 45 minutes. I did not roam the area very much, but it seemed to have all the modern day conveniences one could wish for. Plenty of shopping and restaurants, etc. There are many surrounding cities to consider for relocating, all within an easy drive to Cleveland and its suburbs. If you are a football fanatic, the football hall of fame is right there in Canton.
And as Craig mentioned, the drive to Erie from here is only about 90 minutes. You, Jack, Neuronbob and I could make easy re-con sorties to his house to try and get some nifty spy photos of his uber-secret projects! (Well, maybe not Jack!):goofy:

Thanks guys for the info
Yea I did talk to a buddy of mine that worked there while going to school and said there are a few small areas that are REAL NICE, and it is a college town so there is some nightlife...
He also said that living north between akron and cleaveland would probably be the way to go.
The other problem is there will be very very little challenge and they are rolling in a new cad system and I will be the expert/trainer(not my job but it will happen I know) and the last time I was involved with roll out of a new system it SUCKED. I almost wonder with some of the questions the boss asked me if that isnt going to be more of my position and less engineering.Kevin

I'm thinking that living in Akron and getting a regular pay check that let's you hang out at the boring neighborhood bar AND be able to pay for your beer is LOTS better than being unemployed, broke and in Detroit. :clapper:
We lived in Detroit from 1976 - 1981 as the car industry started its decline. Even without that, we were extremely happy to see Detroit recede in the rear view mirror.
If the conditions around the job aren't exciting, take it anyhow. It is much easier to find a job when you are employed and you'll also feel better about being able to sleep inside. :woo:
If you REALLY need some entertainment, you can drive over to Jack's place and agitate him. :thumbsup:Ray

You do whatever is best for you. :) If you liked what you were doing before, you do the long-term contract. If not, consider the move to NEO.
Audio meet time!
