Thought you guys might like this if you haven't heard of it. My friend makes surfboards for a living and is getting into making Stand Up Paddleboards, which have been around for a few years now and is much easier than surfing unless you're going into waves. Every Sunday morning he does a demo at a beach park and usually a moonlight paddle on the full moon. Here are a few pics.

Paddles can be wood or carbon fiber.

Looks like a lot of fun! I saw some pics of an old friend doing this in FL, hadn't seen it before then. And this pic is VERY cool, what a beautiful area! Where is that? (I'm assuming Hawaii, but more specifically what island and area)
What if the Hokey-Pokey really IS what it's all about?!

    Kinky Tom!

Those wouldn't work in California. We don't have nice smooth surf like that. You would have to get way out past the breakwater before you had anything near smooth enough to use that and then you get people caught in rip tides being taken out to sea.

I saw some people doing this on the Colorado river in Austin, TX. It took me by surprise at first as I had never seen it before. Neat stuff.

Not everyone is as slow, or in need of calm water as we were. youtube has tons of videos with SUPs and waves if your interested.

Well, that is more interesting. It still would be tough for California, you would have to stash the paddle in order to get past the break water because we don't have the long rolling waves like Hawaii, we have fast powerful breakers that can be a ***** to get through. The waves in Hawaii are radically different from the waves in California and take quite a bit of time to get used to.

That's more like it ( the old fart says). I was just thinking they could do a gladiator/roller derby version where they wack each other in the head with the paddle...:biglaugh:

how about a nice little engine on the back to speed things up a bit and maybe 2 handles on each side to sit down. Then you'd probably get your foot or hands torn off by the motor when you fall off. Looks fun though.
