  • Brains in a can

I learned something new today. I was at USDA for a sign off on some paperwork and the guy there had these cans which at first I thought were a joke, but he assured me they were real and you could still buy them in Mississippi (where he is from), and they are on the menus for breakfast, scrambled eggs and brains. He said the newer cans have the nutritional values and a small can has two servings at 1300% the recommended allowance of cholesterol per serving. Anybody ever try canned pork brains?

I sometimes eat head cheese but that is made from the head after the brains are removed... I remember someone at av123 started a thread about canned expresso coffee. I wonder which one is really worse... The food we eat seems pretty normal, it's the stuf other people eat which is gross.

I'm not surprised that these are available...I've seen canned silkworms before (my friend had to eat them, unknowingly, for a frat initiation)...

Although, if you really think about it, many foods that we eat which we think is normal really isn't. I mean, who would've thought that we would be eating the thick secretions of a sweat gland that have sat around and rotted and grew bacteria for awhile? That would be cheese. MMmmmmm!

One man gross is another man delicacy. ;) :)

Ask MLS what he had for meals while we were in VN.
I believe to this day, he still thinks he had pork. :D

When my grandfather and I used to go squirrel hunting, he'd fry the brains and eat them. I tried them once. Not the best thing ever, but not terrible. It had the consistency of mushrooms.

I understand there's lots of gross food out there to eat. I was offered fafaru many years ago in Tahiti but passed. The thing that surprised me is that Libby's AND Armour felt there was a demand for canned pork brains and actually marketed them.
