Yep, Apple doesn't like you using "their" devices for unintended purposes. :stirthepot:

        OK D....Mr. Wise guy::raspberry:

I know how apple is, but there's so much more cool stuff I can do hacking it. It's just been a frustrating learning curve as I'm totally new to apple, and I'm learning stuff the hard way by messing stuff up, and having to start from scratch.

This time in honor of the new Star Trek, I had a cool theme going on with sounds hacked in for all kinds of functions, and a Nero ringtone I made.

The problem came up when I wanted to remove a background on the lockscreen...and oops!! bricked the phone. This is the second time I've done it in a week.....<sigh>

        I'm such a damn tweeker...:dizzy:

Try a search for quickpwn. I don't remember the exact steps, but it was relatively easy. Downloaded a couple of things I liked from Cydia. Some make the phone act a little odd every once in awhile, but nothing really serious. And, I've never "bricked" mine (3G), even when I "synch" it a couple of times a week.

Some of those Cydia downloads are more "reliable" than others. Just gotta be a little careful and research for those that offer support.

As a side note, I went to the Apple store to get a new set of headphones that have a mic. As another side note, don't get the V-Moda headphones. They're garbage....sound OK, but I went through 4 pair and they all quit working within 3 months. Anyway, the sales person noticed the Cydia icon on my phone....obvious that I "jailbroke" the phone. He chuckled a little bit. Mentioned that Apple frowned on jailbreaking. Then, he showed me his iphone with the Cydia icon on it. 'Nuff said!

I need to re-break mine, used to have it broken. The only thing I really miss now is being able to use it as a wireless modem.

Thank GG, but I'm a bit beyond that. I've jailbroken a total of 3 times now...twice in the last week. I've been doing stuff beyond simply installing jailbroken apps.....I've been getting into the registry (I know it's not called that, but for lack of a better word) and tweaking individual files. Basically I've been taking bits and pieces of different themes and trying to create my own. I had it 99.8% the way I liked it, except for one graphic. Screwed my phone up when I tried to modify it.

Anyway, late last night (early in the morning) I just restored and am starting over. I'm about 30% there as of now. It's a PITA to create all the tones (lock/unlock/sms/voicemail/typing sounds) and get them in the right file extensions then find where they go in the phone.

Yep, I use PDA net often. It works great. I highly suspect we'll see a jailbreak app for the new slingplayer. Still can't believe that AT&T denied use over 3G when plenty of other phones do...:no clue:

Here's the basic lockscreen. What I was trying to do is get rid of the
shading behind the clock. You can't simply remove that file with Cyberduck, or you have all sorts of other seemingly unrelated problems. After what I went through...I'm inclined to leave it for now.

The fingerprint slider was taken from the FBI theme, and I've created Star Trek unlock tones for the lock/unlock sounds.

                ....back to work...

DAYUMMM! Here I thought I was the adventurous one. Curious, once you "brick" the iphone, is it a simple restore to get it back? I just can't understand that Apple would leave someone high and dry with a bricked phone (but it wouldn't surprise me).

I'm getting a little bit more adventurous.....still don't hold a candle to most I run into on the hacking forums.

My most serious 'bricking' occurred last week when I tried putting in some files into the system that didn't belong, or I put them in the wrong place. I was trying to do this mod:

The instructions weren't meant for a newbie like myself..

Anyway, the phone got stuck in a boot mode, where I got the pineapple logo just looping and looping. iTunes wouldn't recognize the phone, and a hard reset was useless. I ended up learning that if you hold the home and power buttons for like 20+ seconds, it will show a caricature of Steve Jobs saying something in Russian, and you can finally do a restore. Whew....

I just don't have the motivation to hack it for a while now. I'm just gonna leave it the way it is....may do some basic Cydia apps, but that's about it.

PM me if you want to discuss some of this stuff. A member from av123 is the one who originally helped me....he spent hours on the phone with me.

                      Success!!!!!!

Had to tweak another theme and delete everything I didn't want. The only thing I don't like about this approach is I'm actually using 2 themes at the same time. But I got rid of the shadow behind the clock..

Thanks, Jason. I may take you up on your offer. Only thing I've done is jailbreak and download a couple of Cydia apps. I'm too much of a chicken**** (or too afraid that Apple will render my phone useless) to do much else.

yes, jailbreaking voids the warranty. But I know you can always restore to factory condition if a warranty issue arrises. If you do restore, you have to re-jailbreak and start over...PITA as I'm finding out. I wonder if there's a way to backup the jailbroken phone image to help when/if you do this.

I've never heard of anyone having problems restoring if required for warranty purposes.

Jason.....I thought there was a little bit of "wiggle" room with warranty on jailbroke iphones? I seem to remember an article where there was an actual legal fight where there was an injunction against Apple from disallowing warranty work on jailbroken iphones.

I wish I could remember where I saw that. It was several months ago, however.

never heard that one, but it doesn't surprise me. In my short time with apple products I've noticed a small, but vocal subset that always likes to push the issue of apple's restrictive policies. Psystar is the most prominent one of those.

Anyway, I don't have any reservations about recommending people jailbreak. Even if you don't want to do heavy modding, there are a few little cosmetic tweaks that just personalize the phone and make it better imo. Also, the whole tethering thing is BS imo, as I should be the one who determines how I want to use the data plan that I pay for. If I don't consistently exceed the 5 GB limit, I should be able to do whatever the hell I want. I don't use PdaNet a lot, but do use it once a week or so.

..been tweaking sounds a little bit more, and I've about got my Star Trek theme the way I want. I'm not interested in creating custom app icons and totally rearranging the springboard to look like a TNG computer terminal or anything....just basic walpaper and sounds. I've got lock/unlock/sms/voicemail/ringtone sounds now in place.
