  • Opinions Neede re: Toyota Tundra

My Silverado got rear ended and will be totaled. Being in a car wreck is not fun.

    I am looking at a 2006 Tundra Limited...fully loaded with only 27K miles..Price is $20K.

What do you guys think about a Tundra. I have a very favorable impression.

    Thanks

    Mike

I have a black 06 double cab 2 wheel drive Limited. It has 20K miles. Where are you located? I am thinking about selling it to buy a 2010 model. The Tundra is probably the only truck I will consider any more, and I'm in construction so I've had any number of trucks over the years. You won't regret it. The limited really isn't a work truck though. The payload capacity is limited, but on the other hand, it rides like a Caddy. Love the JBL sound system.

I have only spoken to a couple of Tundra owners on a personal level about their trucks. Well, two to be precise. One was ambivalent simply feeling the truck was a means of transportation and satisfied his requirements adequately. The other bought three of them to replace some vehicles in his business fleet and he was disappointed (very much so) with the trucks. This later example was for the new redesign about 2 years ago.

Personally, I would look at another Chevy or a Ford if you are looking for a new truck. I am on my third F150 and have driven all the major alternatives and am satisfied with my purchase. Of course YMMV.

I have an 06 Tacoma with the access cab/full 6' bed and it is great. The v6 has more than enough power. The Tundra v8 doesn't scale as well as the v6 does. After the added weight you don't by yourself much additional power. My Tacoma was only 10 inches shorter than a Tundra as well. My Tacoma is less than a joy to park. The Tundra must be hellish. Other than parking it and gas millage I have no complaints. Might want to give the newer Tacomas a look. They really aren't a small truck anymore.

Mike - For reliability, the 2006 Tundra and F-150 are about even. Fords are less expensive to find parts for when you do eventually need them, but overall, the ownership cost will be pretty close.

If you like the Tundra at which you are looking, check out the pricing on www.kbb.com.

I priced out a limited 4x4 and it came in at $21,770 retail value.

$20K is on the high side of a good deal, but used trucks are carrying a big premium right now.

Regardless the info we are being fed from Washington, DC, trucks are in HUGE demand.

                      Craig, thanks for the info.

I ended up getting a Darrell Waltrip Limited. Fully loaded with 35K miles and service records indicate that it was well cared for.

I hope you paid under 30 for it. ;)

BP, yeah, I'm OK now. I was sore for a few days and in a daze for 3-4 days. Thanks for asking.

BTW, the Tundra is *really* nice.

I don't agree with that. I own a Tacoma so know the V6 well. I also rent a lot of full size pickups since I'm in the mining business. When I go to site every month I drive a full size, and I have tried the GMC and Ford 1-ton diesels, the F150 with a V8, Nissan Titan, and Toyota Tundra. My favorite is the Tundra and the V8 has a lot more jam than the V8 in my Tacoma, even in the bigger truck.

Can't go wrong with the new Tundra, they are nice trucks. Glad you like yours. I don't plan to buy one myself since it's to big to drive around in Vancouver.
