  • MS Updates Hosed My Laptop!

I am so PO'd that I am breathing through my skin! Laptop was working perfectly. I installed the MS updates and now the dang laptop will hardly boot. Even if it does, it won't work after a few mintues.

I have tried last known good config, system restore (2 different restore points), booted to safe mode and uninstalled a couple of programs that hung up on boot, ran a couple of virus scans (all OK). Still is hosed.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks for any help.

    Mike

I had the same problem last week with IE8 update. Restore did not help. I had a guy at work help me and he removed some stuff from my registry and did the Uninstall in the Add/Remove function. He said not to mess with the Registry unless you know what you are doing. The Uninstall process will leave you with IE7 when done.

My Laptop is back to normal and i would suggest bringing your machine to someone who knows what they are doing unless someone here can give you better advice than me.

Ha....good one...that did not occur to me. Just to be 100% crystal clear, the culprit was Microsoft.

                Are you running XP?
Restoring isn't going to help you, you need to uninstall the update that hosed you up. If you go to add/remove programs in the control panel and make sure that the "Show Updates" box is checked and scroll down to "Windows XP - Software Updates" and it will show you the date installed and you can "remove" the update (maybe, some of them can't be removed).

Running XP Pro. I did not know what you said about restore. I was under the impression that going back to a restore point that was prior to the updates would get rid of the items that were updated by MS.

                  Good info....thanks.

                    Update.

Our IT folks at the firm got involved. Short story is that the hard drive is failing and Dell is sending a replacement. Should be here by Friday. Gosh, this fast service sounds almost too good to be true. I will be sure to report back.

If I didn't hate microsoft so much I would give you a hard time about blaming it on Bill. :)

Actually, yes, that was my first thought...though Microsoft came soon after (and is a much likelier culprit ;))

6+ months since I bought my first Mac, and so far so good. I've had a few hiccups....safari closing unexpectedly, and a program has gotten hung up a couple times. Overall, a huge improvement over my prior Windows experience. I still feel ignorant about the OS, and probably need to get some instruction to advance my knowledge.

But the overall experience is much better IMO.

If you have any questions man, don't be afraid to ask. I've have owned Macs since the Lombards:

But my first Mac was a IIe courtesy of my parents:

Then we got one of these:

Ok I just dated myself. I use the new Macs mostly for Unix now though. :D :woo:
