  • Kitchen remodel:Help!

Not advice, grab a tool belt. I started this the first time MLS shut down the forum. I was hoping to get some time off to do this in between clients: didn't happen so it's all been done on weekends. And now the floor sanding guy will be here April 13th so I have to get my little :assshake: in gear. I started at the other end of the room which is about 10 by 34. I took off all existing wall coverings and rewired and re insulated exterior walls and the ceiling. Removed a partition wall and closet. Moved and made larger an opening in a load bearing wall. Added a closet to the existing kitchen cabinets. Re-trimmed (I made the trim) and re-painted the adjoining hallway. Plastered and painted and trimmed 60% of the room. What's left: wire, insulate and paint what I just demolished. Install the wood floor minus a small section near the door where there will be slate. Make matching doors for the kitchen cabinets I made. Various trim and paint. Install decorative spruce beams on the ceiling and perhaps make an island out of the leftover spruce beams:crying:. I would enjoy this if I was a little less tired. Just wanted to vent. Off to Home Depot, Sunday morning 7:45...

Well, you can accuse me of many things ( and some of you have:)) but you can't accuse me of being lazy. The floor sanding guy called me and I had a choice between two weeks early and two weeks late so, as walking on the rough flooring is getting old real quick, I choose two weeks early( next Wednesday). So that means really get the :assshake: in gear. Since Sunday morning I got the insulation, electrical, drywall and mudding ( mudding only partially) done. I also removed some of the rough flooring boards and replaced them with 3/4 inch plywood where the slate is going near the side entrance. I also got the hardwood floor and am ready too install tomorrow... BTW I did my 40 hours at my regular job also. I'm a little tired now but all the crap work is done and every hour I invest now will give me some satisfaction in the way of visible improvement...

A few more pics of work on my modest home...

When I bought my house in Dec of 2007 I gutted it and still haven't got it all back together. :)

Very sharp :) Keep up the good fight. We're redoing a bathroom and adjoining office - read have been doing for 6months. Not enough time in the day .

Got a few days off. So a little more work done. Here's a pic of how I made the beams. The big piece of wood on the left is a 3 by 12 and it is what I started with to make the 3 by 5 3/4 beam... which I hollowed out to fit around a 2x4 ...which is the little piece of wood in front of the 3 x 12...

Beams going up, over the 2x4

We are very happy with the beams. They've cut down the long boxiness of the room and add a lot of warmth...

The floor turned out great too

I continue on. Jethro would like this part... I wanted to keep this remodel cheap so the cabinets are staying. I needed to add a closet though so I'll have to make a couple of matching doors. And replace a few that the previous owner did very badly. We like how this worked out, it looks a bit like an antique kitchen. We decided to fill in the top of the cabinets and add an ogee. I made a new top for the island out of offcuts from the ceiling beams ( just waiting for the wood to dry out a bit). I'll be doing some new tile on the back splash and re-trimming the window. BTW, the small nook at the top of the closet is for my wives big recipe books...

Slate at the side door done. The grout isn't dry and it'll need another coat of sealer to pop the color and texture . Those little 2inch square tiles are pretty tough to install. I'm satisfied with the outcome...

I'll update this thread. Maybe I can get a comment from the Quadman... made this a while back (repainted since):

Now doing this to keep the spouse happy. Pretty long project: 7 doors and 4 drawers. The wood top is made out of 6 50 year old birch stairs that I recuperated from a job. Doing the painting now: oil based :hissyfit:...
