  • Craigslist--Waste of Time?

I've got my Martin Logan/Acculine 5.1 system listed on Audiogon for $1,600 OBO. Should I bother to list them on Craig's List? I've never bought or sold anything there and it's always struck me as the Walmart of internet selling. I don't want a bunch of sleazeballs coming to my house to kick my speaker tires. Occasionally I see some quality stuff listed there but mostly drek.

So who's used it and what have your experiences been like?

I've used it with moderate success. I've mainly bought off of it. It probably depends on your local as to what kind of responses you'll get. I sold a dishwasher when I lived in Belle Plaine, KS (population 1800) about 20 miles south of Wichita.

There are a lot of scams there so watch out. The one I ran into most was in the job opportunities section and was the African wire transfer crap most of us know about.

If I were you, I'd go ahead. It's free, and you never know you might find a few serious inquiries. Be careful and do some screening via email before you invite them over, and use your gut.

We're in the market for a new home, and find lots of great listings there.

I wouldn't sell any niche high dollar items like those speakers (too limited of a market), but we've bought and sold many things: baby stuff, freezer, etc.

It doesn't hurt to list them on Craigslist.

Copy your Audiogon ad, don't put a phone number and just ignor any emails that don't look serious.

The main thing you will get is a lot of low ballers.

LOL...i thought you were talking about craigsub's subwoofer ranking list. Certainly *not* a waste of time ;)

My bad. I should have checked the spelling before I posted the thread. Craig, please edit the title or not. Maybe you get a chuckle out of this.

I bought my MFW-15 based in large part on your list. OK, I'm a fanboy of the list. Sue me. Funny thing is the lowball offer I got for my speakers today was from Audiogon. Go figure.

Keep in mind that there is no feedback on Craigslist and it's nearly impossible to know who you're dealing with.

Last spring I bought a GE Profile stainless steel cooktop through a "dealer" that was advertised as brand new. I confirmed with the seller through email and then with a followup phone call that it was in fact a brand new unit. He offered it for $300 under retail and said it was part of a building supply liquidation sale. It showed up to my house without the gas pressure regulator included and with numerous scratches on the stainless steel. When I notified the seller about this he said that if I wanted something that was perfect I shouldn't have gone through Craigslist.

I'll let you take your own moral from this story.

Never heard from anyone with my Craigslist ad. Got 2 lowball offers from Audiogon until yesterday when someone offerred me $1,600 less half the shipping cost ($215). Paypal is done and speakers ship out to Washington tomorrow.

Spoke to Kyle at AV123 today and the prepaid Rockets are in and mine ship on Monday. He said a lot of them went out today so if anyone else was waiting on 850 Package they should be arriving shortly. Thanx to Skeeter99 for selling me his credit and Shadowlight and BP2007 for letting me audition their Rockets.

Really looking forward to new speakers. Can't hardly wait.

If I had, oh, $1,600 - maybe it would be a nice addition.

In any regard, I'm glad Audiogon came through for you. It still seems like a great marketplace for "better" audio gear.

Homes are actually selling fairly well around here (Southwest Tulsa). Stuff is going for around $80/sq ft. give or take $5.

I've had some good luck with craigslist this week. Sold a few things that were sitting around not getting used. Some items I just have to be firm with my price though and tell people I'm not going to give them 20-30% off the listed price just because they asked. I usually look at eBay to determine where to set my item prices.
