  • Question about subwoofer Amp Gain setting...

I have dual VS18.1's and a sub1 amp powering them. Assuming the overall subwoofer playback level stays the same, does it matter how high the gain on the sub1 amp is set?

In other words, if I use a BFD to lower the level using EQ filters but the sub1 gain is set 3/4 of the way up, or I raise the level using the BFD EQ settings but turn the sub1 gain down is there any difference other than noise floor? Do I lose overhead in the amp one way or the other?

Put another way, if the sub pre-out level of my Receiver is set to +10 or -15 but the amp gain is adjusted for a consistant output level is there an advantage one way or another in terms of amp head room?

Lets ignore the BFD's headroom and noise floor as well as any internal consequences in the reciever... I'm only trying to understand how amp gain relates to overhead for a given output level at the subs.

Hope my question makes sense... and thanks!

The Sub-1 has a lower noise floor than the BFD, and is also likely lower than the receiver - so 3/4 on the Sub-1 is a sensible choice.
