  • Why swithching from sa1000 to other amps

Question for those who used Daytons to power craigsubs and then switched over to other makes: why did you do it?
I am especially curious about those who run single 18.2 or dual 18.1s.
    Thank you

more or less just morbid curiosity "if" I could get more performance out of my 18.2. And yes it did work for me. I currently use a mackie 1400i to run my 18.2 and a crown xls-1500 to run my 2 cinema f20s

I don't know the measured difference between the two, the dayton just seems to run out of steam whereas the mackie pushes the sub near it's limits without overdriving it. I think the measured difference between the two may only be 2-3 db, but it's noticeable regardless.

thank you for the reply. that's exactly the kind of info I was looking for.
is the mackie a fanless design? I's hard to tell from the pictures i found

        thanks again

I have (4) SS-18.1 subs and switched to two Berry EP-4000 amps. The Dayton amp was entering protection mode on Bass heavy movies at reference levels. My input level from the Onkyo 805 AVR runs hot and seems to be a better fit with the Berry amp.

Also, I have many options with the 2 channel EP-4000...right now, I have all four subs running off one amp or I can run the amp bridged to two subs...IOW, I can run at various set-ups to play around with different sub/amp configurations in my room...

I agree with stormwind about a noticeable difference...:)

            @Bass Addiction

            makes sense.

I am curious how many daytons did you drive your 18.1s with? did you have one amp per sub or per pair?

I had one Dayton amp driving two CS 18.1 subs...4 ohm load to the amp.

When I ordered the 2012 SS 18.1 subs, I decided to go with the Berry amp and then sold my Dayton amp and picked up another EP-4000 for my original CS 18.1 subs.

I will look at the new amps that Craig is bringing in as well...:peeping:

the mackie is not a fanless design. I have an onkyo 805 as well as bass addiction, it shuts down the dayton periodically due to a higher output voltage than most other avr setups. I know craig doesn't make anything on the dayton amps that go with the subs so i'd take his input on this into consideration as well if he has something to say. I haven't personally tried the behringer, but I've heard good things.

                  Thank you.

how bad is the fan noise on pro amps in your experience?

I probably would not worry about this for movies - I've learned to live with noise from my projector by now. But for music only I'd strongly prefer something that is close to silent. Is it even possible with modes and and all?

                    The EP-4000 is LOUD...

I can easily hear it at 14' away. I am planning to move it to another room/basement or do the fan mod...

I have not thought about placing the amp behind the wall. It may just work for me. I already do this for my HTPC. I will have to run 40 feet of speaker wire to the sub however. Is this okay?
In general is it better to use long line level cable and short speaker wire or the other way around?

theres a mathematical formula to figure out how much power you would lose, I would HIGHLY doubt you would be able to tell the difference blindfolded as to whether you were using a 6 foot or a 40 foot speaker cable run. That's assuming you are using 12 or 14 gauge wire.

The fan noise is audible to me when I'm not watching a movie, but when I am I totally forget theres fans at all. I use a cooling fan with my onkyo 805 because it runs so damn hot. All I have it doing is running center channel and rear surrounds and I swear you could cook an egg on it.
