  • Bit the bullet, joined the chase family

Been researching for the past few weeks on what to purchase as an upgrade my two BIC F12's, which were my first entry into buying powered subs. After great debate and internal turmoil in going back and forth between other well known ID vendors, such as Rythmik, SVS etc., I decided that a new VS-18.1 felt like home.

Part of that sell was the community I see here, so I wanted to shout out and say thanks for the informative posts, and apparent lack of douchebaggery. :applause:

You'll be hearing from me soon as I try and cram this beast into my small room and get it set up!

I might be. Are there any chances of structural damage with a single one?

Pics won't be a problem! I can't take credit for the word, but I'm glad I could share. I work in IT, which in all honesty, should be considered the new "Sailors mouth" of our time. I'm sure I'll drop a few more gems on everyone before my time here is up. :)

                  Thanks for the welcome!

Now, on to business. I need you kind folks to lead me from the land of the "plug and play crappy sub", to the light. What all am I gonna need to really enjoy this thing?

Obviously, for the first 5 minutes, I will probably plug and play just so I can giggle incessantly like a girl. However once that moment has passed, what else am I gonna want?

Oh and lamp cord. What kind of lamp cord do I want? I have some standard 12 gauge speaker wire and some banana plugs on hand, do I need something heavier duty? I'm only looking at about 6-8 feet from the amp to the sub. I've never broken down and gotten a ratshack meter or figured out REW simply because I assumed the BIC's weren't worth it. What do you all recommend?

I love to learn the ins and outs of things, and I've always had the itch to get into this, so now's my chance!

Thanks again for the welcome everyone.

                  X

Your 12 gauge speaker wire should work just fine.

Xarious - 12 guage wire will work just fine. The hookup is really simple ... RCA "subwoofer" cable from your receiver to the Dayton amp, and the speaker wire from one channel of the Dayton amp to the subwoofer, just like hooking up any other speaker.

Make sure the subsonic filter is switched to "on", bass boost to "off" and that the parametric eq's gain is set at "0". "0" is about "2 o'clock" on the dial - you will want to make sure it isn't turned all the way to the left.

What is the rest of your system? Also, what are your room dimensions, including other open areas (if any) that the room is adjacent to?

Your "room", to the subwoofer, is made up of all the areas open to it.

If you can close doors between the actual room and others, it helps
make for an easier set up.

Xarious - one more question - did you have a thread on AVS about a subwoofer purchase?

Hi X, I would recommend (and currently use) the OmniMic from Parts Express...I have used REW and I prefer the OmniMic for ease of use, fast set-up and quick learning curve.

Thanks, Craig! I've already got good interconnects for the LFE, so I will bananaplug up some 12GA for the new sub.

My room is QUITE small currently, so I don't think I'll have any issues there. It's roughly 15x12x9 No open areas (it's just a bedroom being used as a small HT/office)

I'm currently using an Onkyo 709 receiver, Emotiva XPA-3 powering my Monitor70 mains CSi5 center. Using some Polk M40 bookshelves as rear surrounds. Obviously the two aforementioned BIC F12's as subs.

                            TV is a 60" Sammy UN60D7000.

Yes, I did. :) I was the best bang for ~$1000 guy. Er, the sub thread, I'm a lousy bang for $1000. :D

I mainly did my research on my own reading various reviews and information around the net. I chose the VS18.1 based on my own findings and gut feeling. :)
