  • Lost in a sea of data

I have a basement room, 14' x 30' x 8' all enclosed, and I was originally going to purchase an Epik Knight subwoofer for my current home theater system, but I have no idea if they're going to ever sell them again. I run a 7.1 denon receiver (AVR 1707), Cerwin Vega D-9s for the mains, and mid range 200 dollar center/back channel speakers. It's nothing fancy, but I want a subwoofer that is on par with the epik knight ish either in price or in qualify.

Any suggestions you have greatly appreciated.

Krozman - The MFW-15 from AV123 is a natural competitor to the Knight. They only have wood finishes in stock now, and list the price at $799 plus shipping. A phone call would possibly save you some $$$.

You can find them here: subwoofer page

As Craig knows, I have owned and tested several subwoofers. (Not NEARLY as many as him.... but who has?)

I am running an MFW-15 in my system right now and I am very very pleased with it. Especially when you consider it cost 1/6 of what one of my previous subs did.

The MFW-15 doesn't seem to be ported. The Knight is ported. What difference I am going to see from that fact alone?

The MFW-15 has a large slot port across the bottom of the subwoofer. See the black rectangle at the bottom ? That's the port. :)

krozman - I can't say enough good about my single MFW-15. I love it because it fills my 27'X12.5'X8 space with bone crushing bass when called upon to do so. After proper calibration the sub blends in with my speakers seamlessly. I recommend it highly.

Slot ported and tuned to around 19hz. The port is also folded around to the top of the enclosure inside which both makes the lower tuning possible and strengthens the enclosure. :applause:

How much am I losing if I go for Outlaw's LFM-1 EX ? $519 with free shipping right now.

Ok, I contacted AV123 and they'll work with me on the price, except it's still over a $300 difference between the MFW15 and the outlaw LFM 1 EX. I have no illusions that the MFW15 is superior, but how much superior?

The Outlaw, while I have not had one here, should be on a par with the Hsu VTF-3 mark III.

The MFW will be a step up ... but it's a tough call considering the $300 difference.

I'm of the mind that you should do things right the first time.

Every time I settle because something is cheaper and readily obtainable, I always end up upgrading several months down the road.

I haven't read this whole thread, but krozman, if you want a MFW, wait the extra time and save for the different IMO.

This way dissatisfaction with the Outlaw, if you had any, won't turn into the "what if" game, with you buying the MFW anyway.

To this day I regret buying 850's instead of RS1000's. Its also the reason I am not-so patiently waiting for the LS-9's to ship instead of changing my order to the LS-6es that I could probably have in a couple of weeks.

Amen Amen King. Every last time in my 51 years I tried to cut corners and cheap it out, I have so immensely regretted it. I 100% agree on waiting until you get what you want. A few months go by so quickly anymore, if the op needs to save up a bit. I do have 2 MFW-15's and do not regret it.

Sorry for the lack of update. I ordered the AV123 sub. By the time I was done negotiating with the guy, I got the nicer looking sub for like zero price difference. Ships out tuesday so they say!
