  • Help Choosing the Right Sub

I wanted to get thoughts on a subwoofer to go in my particular setup.

The subs kind of 'have' to go behind the false wall, which is sitting on a stage filled with sand & decoupled from the walls. Any sacrifice in placement is due to aesthetics and space in the room.

Dedicated home theater room is 13w x 25L x 10H, so estimating about 3250 cubic feet. About 15 feet from the screen will be the first row of seats on the floor. The first riser goes up 14 inches from the floor, and the next riser is 24" off the floor. So the ceiling height space decreases half way thru the room. I've included images below.

I'm not sure about what or how many subs to choose for this space. I thought about doing just 1 sub if possible, or if need be, 2 to balance things out with one on each side of the stage or both dead center of stage. All depends what will be provide the right balance of performance and value. I'm going for impact, but without a huge impact to the bank.

Please ask for any other info you need from me and I'll do my best.

Since they wont be seen, there is no use in paying more for the new/nicer finish on the CHT subs. I would go with the CS-18.T ...2 separate 18" subs with one amp. Should come in at 1425.00 shipped. Those two separate subs will help balance out some of the nulls and the impact is just incredible. I debated on one vs two subs but am glad that I went with two. I cant wait for you to post about that "grin" :biglaugh:
    Denon X4000
Front- Klipsch Chorus II (Samson sx1200 amp)
    Center- Klipsch Academy (Denon x4000)
Rear Surrounds- Klipsch RP5 (Denon X4000)
Back Surrounds- Klipsch RC3 (Denon X4000)
    Subwoofers- CHT 18.1 x2 (MQ-600 amp)

+1 on the 18.1T also. It'll definitely help in that size of room, and will give you a bit of placement fexibility. You could put them in the middle, or on each end of the screen for some corner loading, or 1 in the corner and 1 in the middle. Anyways, you get my drift, but since you have invested this much on a very nice room I must say, you definitely want the sound to match.:)

        What those guys said.

How deep is the space behind your screen studs? Looks big enough, remember with a 18.T they are 20" cubes.

(I suppose the new ones are probably 23" or so tall with the integrated feet)

I was trying to stay under $1000 for the sub(s). Would it be a better idea to try one first to hear/feel the effect and than add another? And would putting two 10.2's be a bad idea?

Grinning? Oh I'm sure of it ;)

Def agree...in fact, personally I think it sound even better than it looks ;)

I wish I could say this was my room. It's for my sister & her family, who are paying the bill in finishing their mammoth basement. I'm just investing my time, sweat, blood & tears in helping design and catch the contractor's mistakes along the way. It's been a fun & dramatic ride for the past 2 months.

Good point. When I had designed the stage and false wall, I wanted at least 12" space between the wall and any speakers. So I kept a space of about 26" within the false wall area to fit everything nicely.

Price-wise, I believe the 18.T Duo is essentially an 18.1 (cabinet + external amp) + an 18.P (second cabinet). So the only disadvantage of going with just an 18.1 at first is the extra cost of shipping the 18.P at a later date (should you choose to want one).

If you're cool with that, then you might as well buy what you can now (e.g., the 18.1), see how you like it and worry about doubling up (with an 18.P) or upgrading later.

While, at the moment, there are still a small number of CS-18 cabinets available, the CS line of subwoofers is being discontinued. If one wants to purchase a CS-18.1 S2 now, and buy a passive cabinet at a later date, we cannot guarantee the availability of another cabinet cuz once they are gone, they are gone.

An SS-18.1 purchased first with an SS-18.P purchased at a later date comes out to exactly the same price, shipped, as an SS-18.T purchase.
