  • The new paradigm sub??

Any thoughts on that new paradigm sub that uses 10" drivers and is supposed to be the loudest and lowest sub available??

My thinking is that with well made drivers it will be faster then any 15 or 18 inch offerings and have a much more realistic sound..

Course the thing is suuuuuper expensive..

    Thoughts??

    craig wanna chime in here?

Still think Craig is in the "Chase" for that sense of humour. :neener 1:

Matt ... Larger drivers are no slower than smaller ones, especially in the 16 to 80 Hz range. To help understand this .. an 18 inch driver needs to move less than 1/3rd as far as a 10 incher to deliver the same SPL.

Add into this that an 80 Hz signal is a 14 foot wavelength and a 20 Hz is 56 foot wavelength ... does it make sense that an 18 inch driver is a terrific bass reproducer ?

      "Fast" drivers are called tweeters

Craig is right (of course). Low frequency reproduction is all about "moving air" and there are few drivers that do that better than well built 18's.

It's quite a bit more complicated than they're making it...a lot of which comes down to how audible distortion is from the frequencies handled by subwoofers, transient response, and quality of drivers (efficient, big, + high quality involves some tradeoffs, generally...or a lot of expense).

        At least...from what I've read.

And no single subwoofer can get around the problems caused by the room, not completely. A lot of the generalities about woofer size and quality come from the days of poorer quality larger woofers. The expense is generally still an issue, though.

Some of what is mentioned is likely true, although a lot could be debated.

You are right, but I never intended the answer to be a dissertation on the issues involved. I could be very wrong, but when I see the "age-old" myth about fast low frequency drivers propagated I assume the author doesn't know much about - frequency wavelengths, cycles per second, driver passbands, driver construction and Bl, distortion, etc.

I attempted to dispel the myth with humor, which often doesn't work in this medium :)

Hmmm yeah thinking about it a bit i kinda realized that.. was thinking about some of the fastest music i listen too and it's int the 300+bpm category with 16th+notes being utilized which even at its peak beats per second would never break ~27....
