  • Need small sub for large area

    Hi Guys,

I am looking for a subwoofer. I live in India and a friend of mine will be purchasing it in US and bringing it to India for me. He’s traveling by british air, and they don’t allow packages above 32kg (70 lbs). So the final shipping weight of the package needs to be within this limit. Also, the sub should support 220volts.

    Usage:
    50% movies, 50% music.
I mainly listen to classic rock, blues, heavy metal, jazz, classical music etc.

    Current setup:
Yamaha RX-V663 AVR, marantz cd6000 OSE cd player, B&W 602 S2 for mains, LCR 600S3 center channel, B&W rock solid for surrounds, HTPC with M-Audio revolution 7.1 sound card.

    Listening area

    The main listening area is 19.5 x 18.5 x 10.5
3787 cubic feet. The system is kept along the 18.5 ft wall. The listening positions is about 11-12 ft.

But the Dining and open kitchen is attached to it, and the total area is 31.5 ft x 18.5 x 10.5 = 6118 cubic feet

So I guess I should consider the room to be 6118 cubic feet for subwoofer purchase purpose, right?
What specs at a minimum I should be looking for a sub.

Now the problem is that I guess I need a large sub, which the airlines wont allow me to carry, hence I need to go for a sub which is relatively smaller and/or lighter and still will do the job. The following subs are possible candidates as of now. Please tell me if these are going to be enough or not for this listening area. Any other good options?

    SVS SB12 Plus
    Epik Vanquish. (75 lbs, trying to figure out if this one is possible by something out of the package). 12”, 600w, 20 - 500 Hz +/-3 dB, 14.5 H x 14.5 W x 14.5 D (15.5 w/ grill), 75lbs. Shipped
    Martin logan abyss
Def tech super cube, which one? Can I get a 220v version in US?
Monitor Audio RSW12, can I get a 220v version in US?

I saw a lot of sunfire subs being touted as good and small, how good are these, any particular model that will suit my needs.

My budget is about 800$ including shipping in US. I don’t mind buying a used one as long as its in good not very old and in good condition. The sub should not have a bad breakdown history. Can afford to send it to US for repairs. So, nothing like mfw-15, anyway its too heavy.

I saw some subs with small drivers and a small passive radiator, what is it and how useful/good is it.

    Thanx

FWIW, airlines don't tend to like things with strong magnetic fields. Typically the driver in a subwoofer is not shielded, so this could be an additional issue.

You are much better off shipping the sub you want than having a friend carry a toy that won't serve your needs on an airplane. International shipping is usually not that painful anymore.

Pack the enclosure and the woofer/amplifier separately. :salute:

i agree with m-fine. Look for subs that ship overseas. Many of the ID subs will do this if you call and ask.

What is it that I should be looking for in a sub. I was under the impression that a 12" with min 300 watts and ported design should do the job for me. Is it going to be enough?

I would consider other options once getting a mid size decent sub thru airlines is ruled out. Getting it shipped to india would double the price straightaway.

Did some more research on a couple of subs. Looks like the RSW-12 is a dual voltage sub with automatic voltage selection. How good is this sub in a large area like mine? Anyone knows the street price in US for this. At 12" and 500watts, should be enough right?

Also sent mails to SVS, the PC12 NSD is about 60 pounds shipping weight and it could be gotten. How good is this sub for large areas. I was considering the PC12 plus, but its a lot more expensive and SVS looks reluctant to ship it in parts (though they do it for shipping it to armed forces personnel living overseas, while using USPS), the woofer is shipped seperately. I wont trust my friend to operate the sub, forget about opening and removing the woofer. The total weight is about 86 pounds for this. If SVS agrees, I could probably still go for this one.

How good are the martin logan subs. Most of them dont seem so heavy and reviews sounded quite decent.

Also checked outlaw audio, the lfm1 plus is 70 pounds, but they dont make 220volts products... Damn....

Bad news for me, my wife has ruled out all the cylindrical subwoofers:fryingpan: Now I am back to square one. Now again my list is -

SVS SB12 Plus - this probably will be a toy only.
              Epik Vanquish. (75 lbs, trying to figure out if this one is possible by something out of the package). 12”, 600w, 20 - 500 Hz +/-3 dB, 14.5 H x 14.5 W x 14.5 D (15.5 w/ grill), 75lbs. Shipped

Def tech super cube I, Can I get a 220v version in US? How good is this, is this also just a toy for large rooms.
Monitor Audio RSW12 - any views on this, 12", 500w, good reviews, dual voltage, weight 56lbs + box, probably will be within 70 lbs.
Also got an email from axiom audio, they will ship ep350 with the woofer or amp seperate. How good is it. ep500 is most probably out of my budget:)

Own your home? How about building an IB setup? Wifey would prolly appreciate the form-factor, or lack thereof. :D Heck, even if you don't own your own home. ;)

Got message from axiom as well as HSU, they are ok with shipping the driver seperately. Yippeeee...

Now my list looks like this.

Shipped
                  Sentinel - 95 lbs shipped.

Monitor Audio RSW12 - any views on this, 12", 500w, good reviews, dual voltage, weight 56lbs + box, probably will be within 70 lbs.

                  Axiom Audio EP 350.
Axiom Audio EP 500 - might get the one from their clearance center, though looks like there is a 4 week wait for this.

                  Rythmik F12 with 370w amp
                  HSU VTF-3 Mk3
Whats the scenario with AV123 MFW-15. Are the new amps fine and without issues?

So, help me out guys, which one out of these is the best option for me, and which ones are so bad that I should stop considering those. I am running out of time as I need to make the purchase within the next one week.
