  • good vs good?

i need some advice from the knowledgeable people here.

i have narrowed my sub decision down to 2.

    SVS PB12-Plus $1200

    or

    eD A5 - 350 $800

which would be the better sub? i know what you're thinking, because im thinking the same thing too (which is the title of the thread) but which really has the upper hand? craig? jason? any help? is there any difference besides $400??

im pairing the sub with paradigm speakers and i have a pioneer sc05 but might be getting a pre/pro soon. i listen to music just as much as i watch bluray's. i have read numberous threads and the ranking system and still cant decide. thanks for the help

:rlmfao: Jason for sub help??? :rlmfao:

actually...thanks for the HUGE compliment. Mentioning my name next to Craigs looking for sub help, I'm humbled by the thought...

First, I have no experience with eD (speakers or otherwise:smoke1:), but based on everything I've read, I don't think you could go wrong with their products. Their finish leaves a bit to be desired compared to SVS imo. I totally agree with Craig's opinion that SVS is a great option when WAF is a consideration.

But.....with the budget you mentioned....you could step to the A7-350 with free shipping and still come out less than the SVS. Also, for just $80 more, you can get a 2 channel PEQ, instead of a single channel.

I don't think this model has been with them very long, as I don't remember seeing it when I first visited their site a couple of months ago.

While I have no ideas on its musicality, I would guess by the specs, and their reputation, the A7-350 should beat the SVS in spl.

What would you buy between the A5 and the SVS? I can't step up to the A7. Thanks

Hopefully someone else will chime in for ya....

My intuition says the eD will outgun the SVS. I can't speculate on the musicality of either, as the only other SVS I've owned was the original plus cylinder series. It was quite the HT unit...very smooth and very well behaved when it was pushed past its limits.

The eD is going to extend lower as it has a lower native tuning point. Also, in regards to the variable tuning on SVS, I'm not a huge fan of it. There's more to tuning properly than plugging a port.

Sorry I'm not much of a help. Out of curiosity, why's the A7 out? It's box dimensions are very close to the A5, and since shipping is free, it would be the same cost or a little lower than the SVS. The A7 is twice as heavy as the A5 though...

The ED is a better bang for your buck imo. It also sports a 15-inch driver as opposed to the svs's 12 inch driver. The A5-350 comes w/ an EQ for free. Never hearing either one, I can't say one is definitely better than the other cut and dry. Truth is, one is probably better than the other for certain people, and vice versa. For ME, I'd go A5-350 because its cheaper and most likely will have more output and dig deeper. Others may say the SVS cause it will look better and its from a far more distinguished company. The SVS may have a better warranty, customer support, etc.. I'm not sure about that stuff.

Good luck.. and yah you have good vs good. Maybe if you listen to alot of music check out some other subs as well. Rhythmic, sealed stuff, etc...

Actually I think it's the other way around. The SVS does have a single band PEQ. I'm sure it's the same circuit that I have on my PB13.

I cannot find where the eD has a built in PEQ. They do offer a separate box 2 band PEQ, though that also sports a subsonic filter for $100.

The eD doesn't have a built in EQ... but comes with a free separate EQ unit. http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...roducts_id=657 This comes free with the a5-350 right now due to the amplifier not having a subsonic filter.

Cool. I didn't know they were throwing that in with the A5.

The A5-350 that is out now is a newer model than the one that Craig reviewed. It looks to be a pretty nice sub, but it is so new that I'm not sure how much info on it you will be able to find. It is now front firing instead of down firing, has a new driver and a new amp.

Right now eD is including an EQ.2 with each sub. The reason for this according to a post on their forum is that the new amps don't shut down and will allow you to boost everything and run hot across the board, possibly doing damage to the sub. Here is a link to the thread: http://forum.edesignaudio.com/showth...tml#post570529 (not sure if I can post a link yet due to being a new member here).

Since you listen to a lot of music, you may want to check out the A7S-450 if you want to go with eD. It is an 18" sealed sub and has gotten some pretty good reviews, especially for the money ($860 shipped with 1300 watt amp).

I was waiting for someone else to chime in, but you should at least take a look at the deal going on right now on the GR/Rythmic sub.

I have a feeling this sub is going to be the MFW w/ no issues and a few db lower and louder... I hope so anyhow.
