  • Plugging The A5???

Hey guys, I may have to plug my A5 mains for a short period of time while I do some renovating, the rear ports will be fairly close to a rear boundary, about a foot or less. I believe, correct me if I'm wrong the A5s were designed with this consideration in mind. In my mind I'm expecting compromises, less extension with lower output but maybe better damping. Please enlighten me as I don't know what to expect. Thanks to all who respond.
    Cheers Jeff

    Hey Jeff.

Since the A5's are critically damped, you'll probably be slightly into over-damped territory.

The sound won't go all-to-hell, since at that point I'd expect the enclosure to be slightly large for a sealed alignment....so you might actually pick up a slight amount of upper-bass "bloom" depending on their proximity to the boundary. I'd imagine you'd want to tweak the subwoofer crossover frequency after you plug them.

Jeff, even at a foot in front of the wall, you might prefer the A5s unplugged. They are more forgiving of placement near a rear wall than you would be lead to believe. Try it unplugged first.

Thanks guys, I really don't want to over damp these, and plugging may surely do that, I was afraid of that and the bloom for sure. I just can't force myself to plug them and decided not to. Thanks NSPs for that and Collin for confirming my fears. They won't really be up against a wall but closer to my subs, a top cabinet port would have been ideal:lol: I was ideal when I was using the A1bs as mains for a while as the port on the stands placed it above the subs. I will try and shift my subs a bit to compensate for the port. Better in my opinion than plugging, thanks again guys, take care. One other thought, the Swan D21SE+s really caught my eye, I don't know what to do with another pair of monitors, was wondering if you guys had any thoughts or experience with them?
        Cheers Jeff

Yes, I would choose those over the 2.1SE's. The Dana's are very musical.

I could be full of $hit. Haha.

The proof is in the pudding. Give 'em about 20 hours of break-in time and prepare to have your socks forcefully removed against your will. :D

I would willingly have them removed if the 630is are that good.

My question with the 630i is, would it be waste to use these in a surround application such as front heights or wides? Thanks
                            Cheers Jeff

I don't know about wides, but heights are pretty much a waste of speaker from my experience. I wouldn't spend that much on the 630s just for height or wide use. I'm running heights and even with a movie like Expendables 2 where they mixed it for 11 channels the heights add almost nothing and its really hard to tell going from on to off with the heights.

I'm using the smaller A1s for heights and with DTS NeoX, Audyssey DSX theres nothing going on really. Maybe if you can get them way up high in a large room it might be better but with them 8ft or so up in the ceillings its not worth the hassle.
