  • Outrageous! If ARX doesn't have enough bling for you

Just out of curiosity, I was looking at used speakers on AudiogoN. Some of the prices were ridiculous, but then I saw a 5-year-old demo set of speakers for $135,000. I just had to check out the new ones. They are the Marten Coltrane Supreme reference level loudspeakers and they sell for $350,000 :twisted::twisted:. You can see them here: http://www.audiofederation.com/hifi/...trane-supreme/

    I guess the 2" diamond-mid, 3/4" diamond tweeter use real diamonds.

Is this the most outrageous speaker you have ever seen? Do you think they are worth 466 pairs of A5s? If you were a billionaire, how much would you spend on speakers?

    That's awesome!

If I were a billionaire, I would have Jon build me some large 2-way Line Arrays with some very expensive drivers. I doubt I would spend that much, though.

      Mindreader.

Seriously, we should take a look at the linesource concept later this year...I've been thinking about this for years.

I'll take the cubic zirconium drivers, please.

          ;)

Deal. Maybe some Dana-style midwoofers with an optimized magnetic planar tweeter driver and a simple 2nd-order x-over?

I think a 5-6 foot array would provide an enormous amount of driver surface area for the average home. :D

Don't forget the $4200 speaker bullets. You don't want to shortchange your speakers.

Can this possibly be real? http://www.stereotimes.com/acc092307.shtml

"Physically, the SES Bullets are about 5-inches long and no bigger round than one's thumb, making their asking price of $4,200 a bit difficult to fathom without hearing them."

I hate to admit but these are the secret to making $200/pr factory sell-off speakers perform at top studio reference standards. I've been holding out until now: but the fact is sometimes I don't even need speakers to get these babies to perform. As long as I connect these with the right zero-impedence cables, full of silver wires with special liquids and without oxygen and such; and with gold terminatortions: you can simply lay these out on the floor without speakers and they will often do the job. Alternately if you have a highly-paid recording gig-you can plug these straight into the boards and get that "Keith Richards + a quarter bag of weed" sound that so many seek, without paying for Keith or the weed. It does cost more up front but in simply weeks you'll see a major reduction in maintenance costs.

Time and time again I've tried to go cheap on audio and found that nothing else does the job like spending a lot of money on something more qualified experts recommend.

You really are prescient, Buford. We're working on a 4.5" Arx midwoofer and we already have a special 3rd gen planar that gains bandwidth in exchange for efficiency. The two go together, in other words. A six foot stack would be spectacular and actually relatively affordable.

I hope it was obvious I was being sarcastic. I also hope you don't come out with a kickass new tower right after my A5's arrive. :)

No worries. Anything bigger/more pricey than the A5 will be real wood and/or a radically different concept. The A5 sets the bar for anything I know of up to well over a thousand dollars.

Will the A5 be on par with the Goldenears? They seem similar.

Now it just needs a matching monster center

Why? Won't the A2b do everything you need in a center in a 5.1, 5.2 or 7.x setup?

The A2/A2b is a great center and i'm extremely happy with mine. But it does have its limitations being only a 2 way with dual woofers. In a large room using the A5s the A2 could be a slight drawback at high outputs. Monster center channels like the Paradigm CC590 or PSB Plat C4, make the front sound stage even bigger. I've demoed them several years ago and the impact was amazing. They add better dynamics, more output, deeper extension and just a more effortless sound. Also Axiom has had great success in adding two larger centers to match their tower speakers. Those that have upgraded from the two smaller models to the monster ones has said its the best decision they've made. But I can say that Axioms centers which I've owned doesn't match up to the Arx A2 center. Even the VP150 which is 2.5x as much, sounds wimpy compared to the A2.

So it might be tough to out do the A2 as a center (insert challenge to Jon) ;-) :D

I'll leave this for others, but I'd recommend starting with an analysis of the acoustic size of both products versus price.
